A resident of Loranger, he died Tuesday, Sept. 1, 1998, at North Oaks Medical Center, Hammond. He was 69 and a native of Rose Hill, N.C. He was retired U.S. Air Force senior master sergeant and veteran of World War II. He was a bailiff with the Tangipahoa Parish court system. Visiting was at Harry McKneely and Son Funeral Home chapel, Hammond, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday. Visiting at the funeral home chapel, 8 a.m. until religious services at 10 a.m. Friday. Interment in Loranger Community Cemetery. Survived by wife, Joyce Hooper Merritt, Loranger; a daughter, Judy Merritt White, Husser; a son, Bradley P. Merritt, Edmond, Okla.; seven grand- children, Paul, Matthew, Sarah and Hannah White, Braden, Brett and Bryce Merritt; two brothers, Allen Hall Merritt, Wilmington, N.C., and Percy Merritt, Lexington, N.C. Preceded in death by three brothers, Joe, Howard and Bill Merritt; and parents, Plato and Della Herring Merritt. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Trinity Methodist, 1600 Wellons Ave., Dunn, N.C. *************************************************************************** Obituary published in The Advocate (Baton Rouge): 1/1/2009 MERRITT, WALLACE A native of Tangipahoa Parish and a former longtime resident of Baton Rouge, Wallace Merritt passed away on Monday, Dec. 29, 2008. He was 88 and a resident of Kentwood. Retired from the U.S. Air Force, Wallace was a veteran of World War II and a double recipient of the Purple Heart. He is survived by a son, Donald McMillan, of Kentwood; four grandsons, Dalton McMillan, of Kentwood, Mehmet McMillan, of San Francisco, Orhan McMillan, of Baton Rouge and Dale McMillan, of Galvez; two great-grandsons, Joshua and Jeremy McMillan; great-granddaughter, Madeline McMillan; great-great- grandson, Brayden McMillan; sister, Geraldine Sanders, of Kentwood and sister-in-law, Nell McLin, of Baton Rouge. Preceded in death by his wife, Zelma McMillan Merritt; parents, Obediah and Jessie Grace Merritt; and sister, Maxine Simmons. The family wishes to acknowledge the many devoted health care professionals who cared for him since his stroke in June, with a special thank you to Tracy Bergeron. Visitation at McKneely Funeral Home, Kentwood, on Thursday, Jan. 1, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. until funeral service at 11 a.m. The Rev. Danny Smith, of Spring Creek Baptist Church, will conduct the service. Interment in Mount Hermon Cemetery.
