ORY Retired minister Ory Miller died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008, at Golden Age Nursing Home in Denham Springs. He was 89, born June 15, 1919, in Walker, where he graduated from high school in 1936. He was a member of the U.S. Army Air Forces and served in the European Theater. After working 14 years in the banking business, he entered the ministry in 1950 and graduated from Louisiana College in 1953 and the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary in 1956. He pastored Baptist churches for 23 years before joining the Southern Methodist denomination for 35 years. Rev. Miller served churches in Louisiana and South Carolina. Some of the churches he pastored in the area are First Baptist Church in Livingston, Line Creek Baptist Church in Kentwood, First Baptist Church in Greensburg, Eden Baptist Church in Denham Springs, Spring Creek Baptist Church, and First Southern Methodist Church in Hammond. For the past nine years, he was the resident minister at La Plantation Retirement Center in Denham Springs. An active member of the Denham Springs Masonic Lodge F&AM, he was also a member of the Eastern Star. Rev. Miller is survived by his wife of almost 69 years, Ethel Laird Miller; a daughter, Judy Miller Lytle; two sons, Wendell Ory "Yogi" Miller and wife Karen McBride and Jim Miller and wife Adele; seven grandchildren, Troy Miller and wife Julie, Chris Miller, Robyn Atkinson and husband Bradley, Bill Miller, Jay Miller and wife Daphne, Leslie Schmidt and husband Adam, and Hilory Lytle; nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews, with special mention of Sandra Eccles, his very caring, loving and dependable niece. She was one of the pioneers for working women being one of the first six women hired at Exxon as a chemist in the laboratory in the 1940s. After marrying, she began her teaching career in the Tangipahoa and St. Helena Parish school systems and finally retiring from Oak Forest Academy. She will be sadly missed by her son, James "Ted" T. With the passing of Wayne D. Miller on Saturday, April 28, 2007, a truly bright light is lost from our presence, but not from our hearts. A man of his own, Wayne lived life in his own way and, in spite of serious health concerns the last few years, he made an impression on those around him. Wayne was born on July 16, 1935, in Ashland, Ky. He moved to New Orleans in the 1940s. He served our country in the U.S. Air Force and was an integral part of the Apollo program. His three children, Donald, Michael and Anthony, were reared in the New Orleans area. Wayne worked in Louisiana for White Consolidated Industries (Frigidaire), from which he retired in the mid-1990s. Wayne enjoyed being a Mason with Preseverance Lodge 4 and Wellston Lodge 613. Wayne is survived by his devoted second wife, Luana Berglund; beloved son, Michael Miller, his wife, Susan, and their three children, Jonathon, Heather and Elizabeth; two grandsons from his son Tony, Justin and little Tony; stepdaughter Suzanne Edwards and her children, Candace, Donnie, Chris, Erin, Michael, Layla, Lilly and stepson-in-law Mikey; stepdaughter Maryanne Berglund and her children, Christian and Kandice; stepson Robert Berglund and his sons, Robert and Cory, stepson Tom Berglund and his children, Amber, PJ, Anna, Emma, Maren and stepdaughter- in-law Jude; and two brothers, Donald Miller of Wichita, Kan., and Jake Miller of Ashland.
