In 1950, he joined other athletic trainers in Kansas City, Mo., to form the National Athletic Trainers Association. On a state level, he was highly active in planning the early professional meetings of athletic trainers in Louisiana. In a professional career that spanned 29 years, he never knew anything but a Southeastern Lion team. He became an integral part of Southeastern athletics. He was also important in bringing athletic training help to the first Special Olympics in Hammond. He was honored by being among the first three athletic trainers elected to the Louisiana Athletic Trainers Association's Hall of Fame. He set an example of excellence for all who work or aspire to be athletic trainers. On a daily basis, staff and students are challenged to try and come close to the dedication and professionalism of this great gentleman. He is the founding father of athletic trainers at Southeastern Louisiana University and continued to serve as a mentor until his death. He was born in New Orleans, on Jan. 20, 1927, to James Earnest Morgan Sr. and Mary Hemby Morgan. He grew up in Hammond and was a resident of Baton Rouge since 1956. At the time of his death, he was a resident of St. James Place, Baton Rouge. Mr. Morgan taught school prior to becoming head of safety education for the Louisiana Department of Education in 1956. He served in that capacity until retirement in 1972. After retirement, he served as executive director of the Southern Safety Conference Inc. until 1980. He was active in the Louisiana Safety Council, National Safety Council and Downtown Kiwanis of Baton Rouge from 1974 to 1980. He was a longtime member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Baton Rouge. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by numerous cousins, and friends Claude Wall and Virginia Langston.
