Newell served as St. Helena Parish clerk of court for 16 years, was a volunteer fireman, a former dairy farmer, 1996 Mr. Woodland High School, a member of the Louisiana Clerk of Court Association and other civic organizations and a member of Hillsdale Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Noma Ann Dreher Newell; three daughters, Jessica Milton, Jennie Newell and Bonnie Newell; two grandsons; his mother, Jennie Bennett Newell; a sister, Minnie Newell Hinson; all of the Hillsdale Community; and a half-sister, Eva Mae Elder of Salt Lake City. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Newell; and one brother, Bernard "Butch" Newell. Visitation is today at Hillsdale Baptist Church from 9 a.m. until the funeral at 2 p.m. The Rev. Lee Castello will conduct the service, and burial will be at Hillsdale Cemetery. McKneely Funeral Home in Amite is in charge. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hillsdale Baptist Church Building Funds or Hillsdale Volunteer Fire Department. ************************************************************************* Obituary published in The Advocate (Baton Rouge): 8/3/2004 NEWELL, JENNIE BENNETT "Miss Jennie," born on Nov. 25, 1924, passed away on Monday, July 19, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. at North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond. She entered eternity with open arms to meet her husband, Robert A. Newell; her two sons, Robert "Butch" and Herman C. Newell; two sisters, Dorothy Miller and Jessie Stevens; and five brothers, David, Sam, Elbert, Dillon and Calvin Bennett. Miss Jennie was a retired dairy farmer, housewife and wonderful cook who served her "mouth-watering biscuits" to family and friends. She is survived by a daughter, Minnie Newell Hinson of Amite; seven grandchildren, Keith Newell of Albany, Kimberly and Klint Newell, both of Amite, Jessica Milton of Greensburg and Jennie and Bonnie Newell and Robin Sloan, all of Amite; great-grandchildren, Kari, Keifer, Lake and Nicole Newell, all of Albany, Scott and Kaylie Vinneneuve, both of Amite, Blanc, Brady, Emmitt Court and Emma Kate Milton, all of Greensburg, and Jeff and Crystal Sloan, both of Amite; and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral service were held on Wednesday, July 21, at Hillsdale Baptist Church Cemetery. She was born May 1, 1927, in New Orleans, the only child of Mazie and Frank Ringbom. She is survived by her sons, Frank and Benjamin "Mac" Newell; a daughter, Janet Newell Jewell; and grandchildren, Jason and Emily Newell, Carson and Ben Jewell, and Alec and Austin Sonnier. She was predeceased by her husband, Benjamin L. Newell; and a daughter, Judy Newell Sonnier. She will be remembered for her humor, perseverance and wit. Friends are cordially invited to a visitation at McKneely Funeral Home, Amite, on Saturday, May 14, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Burial will be private. The family would like to express gratitude to Warren Ellzey, Maureen Biggs and David McKeithen for their care and friendship to Rita in her later years.
