He was a native of Pumpkin Center, attended Hammond and Pineville schools and was a graduate of Pineville High. He served in the U.S. Army for 23 years and was a Green Beret Special Forces officer for 13 years. He was attached to the 5th Special Forces group stationed in Ft. Campbell, Ky. He engaged in foreign missions including Somalia, Afghanistan and two missions in Iraq. Survivors include his wife, Regina Knotz Newman, formerly of Germany, of Indian Mound; three daughters, Christina, Monique and Sarah, and two sons, James Paul Jr. and David, all of Indian Mound; his mother, Sandy Shaffer Newman Soape of Ponchatoula; his father and step-mother, Glenn and Myrna Newman of Pineville; three brothers, Glenn and Jules Newman, both of Pineville, and Andy Soape of Ponchatoula; three sisters, Nikki Newman Williams of Anacortes, Wash., Marcy Newman Rogers of Lexington, S.C., and Kim Soape Walker of Youngsville, N.C.; and one grandchild. He was preceded in death by one sister, Brandi Rae Soape; his step-father, Andrew "Bubby" Soape; his maternal grandparents, Camille and Ernestine Shaffer; and his paternal grandparents, Shelby and Anita Newman. She was born Oct. 7, 1927, in Amite, the daughter of the late Jack Lanier and the late Lena White Lanier. Mrs. Newman was a homemaker and a longtime teacher. She taught at Mandeville, Loranger and Hammond high schools, retiring from Ponchatoula High School. Mrs. Newman was a faithful member of Immanuel Baptist Church, Hammond, where she taught the Ruth Sunday School class and vacation bible school. She was beloved by many and will be missed by all her family and friends. Surviving are her son, Edwin Newman Jr.; daughter, Joanna Newman; seven brothers and sisters, Jackie Reed, Therold Lanier, Jon Lanier, David Lanier, Rachel Mixon, Martha Lanier and Mary Adams.
