She is survived by eight sons, Charles Nichols of Hammond, Joe Nichols of Amite, Claude, Harold, John, Danny and Jerry Nichols, all of Independence, and Robert Lee Nichols of Tickfaw; two daughters, Mary Nelson of Roseland and Barbara West of Independence; four sisters, Louisa Harold of Amite, Edna Carter of McComb, Miss., Helen Lucky and Estella Williams; 50 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alice McCoy and Louis Gatlin; her husband, J.C. Nichols; one daughter, Jean Doris Nichols-Jackson; and four sisters, Rose Lee Taylor, Mae Bell Smith, Estee Carr and Velma Burise. Visitation will be Monday from 5 until 9 p.m. at Richardson Funeral Home, Amite. The Rev. Alphonse Edwards will conduct the funeral Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Rock Church of God in Christ, Amite. Burial will be in Leonard Chapel Cemetery, Amite. *************************************************************************** Obituary published in The Hammond Daily Star on: 8/26/2008 NICHOLAS, HAZEL PICOU Hazel Picou Nicholas, 68 years old of Ponchatoula, died Saturday, August 23, 2008 in North Oaks Medical Center. She was born on Wednesday, November 29, 1939 in Maurepas, daughter of the late Alfred and Dovie Campbell Picou. Surviving are daughter, Debbie Nicholas; daughter & son-in-law, Terri N. and Paul Watkins Jr.; 3 grandchildren, Danielle Luneau, Joseph Watkins, Whitney Watkins; great-granddaughter, Kaylin Watkins; brother, E. A. "Buster" Picou and her sister, Beverly P. Costanza. She is preceded in death by her son, Joseph M. Nicholas Jr. and brother, Harold "Lloyd" Picou. Friends will be received Wednesday, August 27, 2008, from 9:00 am until the service begins at 11:00 am at the Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home in Ponchatoula. Interment will follow in the Ponchatoula Cemetery.
