She departed this life on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2006. After attending public school in Hammond, Sister Nunnery moved to Chicago to secure employment. While in Chicago, she married the late Brother Eugene Nunnery Sr., then moved back to Hammond, where together they raised their nine children: six boys and three girls. One of her first jobs was at the Box Factory in Hammond. Later, she worked as a homemaker, taking care of her children. She worked as a domestic for the mayor of Hammond and other families. She also worked in various capacities for more than 25 years for the Hammond State School, from which she retired. Sister Nunnery was blessed by God to live more than 77 years. She lived a life whereby Christ was first in her life. Her only church home was Greenfield Missionary Baptist Church, where she served faithfully and tirelessly for more than 70 years. Her service to the church body included the Mother's Union, The Floral Club, Choir No. 2, Senior Choir and The Ladies Foreign Missionary Organization. Sister Nunnery was also very active in her community. She served as treasurer in the Faith Hope Charity Organization. In addition, she was an active participant in the local NAACP, the voter registration movement, The Order of Eastern StarMartha Graham Chapter, The Lady Doers Club, American League and Cub Scouts. Often during elections, Sister Nunnery provided transportation to voting sites to those who lacked the means to get to the polls. Sister Nunnery's legacy, however, will be the zealous and principled way she reared her nine children. Without much formal education, but with a resolve and tenacity difficult to express in words, Sister Nunnery instilled in her children the importance of a work ethic and education. There could be no excuse for failure in Sister Nunnery's household. In her later years, she suffered many physical limitations due to failing health. But in the midst of all her suffering, she continued to accept God at his word, "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." Sister Shirley Nunnery is survived by her nine children, Charles Nunnery, M.D., of Hammond; Willie J. Nunnery, J.D., and wife Judy, Ph.D., of Madison, Wis., Eugene Nunnery Jr., M.D., of Harlingen, Texas, Michael Nunnery, J.D., and wife Jonalyn of Baton Rouge, Dianne Alsgood and husband Samuel of Ocean Springs, Miss., Alvin Nunnery, J.D., and wife Angela, M.D., of Houston, Elouise Lockridge and husband Wilbert of San Antonio, Debra Johnson and husband Edward, and Kelvin Nunnery and wife Claudette, all of Baton Rouge. She also is survived by her 15 grandchildren, Willie James II, Michael Cordell, Amaya, Nicole Elizabeth, Lauren, Cameron Reneé, Alexandra, Andrew, Amber, Monica, Jana, Edwin Jamarr, Darminic, Brandon and Morgan Kristina; two great-grand- children, Miranda and Eugene III; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and dear, wonderful friends. Sister Nunnery also was preceded in death by her three sisters, Laura, Martha and Mary; two brothers, Leon "Jim" and Willie "Scoot"; and her devoted niece, Ruth Simmons. In March 1998, she was chosen and her name inscribed on a memorial as one of the original Women in Motion for her service to the Hammond community. Like that statue, the love she leaves to us is cemented in our hearts. Visiting at Greenfield Missionary Baptist Church, 100 J.W. Davis Drive, Hammond, LA 70404 on Wednesday, Jan. 11, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visiting resumes at the church on Thursday from 11 a.m. until service at 1 p.m. N.A. James Funeral Home, 407 Noah A.
