He was born Aug. 11, 1926, in Roseland. He graduated from LSU Medical School in 1948. He served as captain in the U.S. Air Force in medical aviation during the Korean conflict from 1950 to 1952. He began general practice in Amite in 1949, and from 1952 to 1957. He served as superintendent of the Farmington State Hospital, Farmington, Mo., from 1963 to 1972, and chief of staff at the Veterans Administration Chillicothe Hospital in Ohio from 1972 to 1975. In 1975 he came home to Louisiana, where he served as psychiatric program administrator at East Louisiana State Hospital and then as clinical psychiatrist from 1975 until he retired in 1988. He served as clinical psychiatric consultant at the North Central Alabama Mental Health Center from 1988 to 1989, at which time he came to serve at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Alexandria until September 1999 as clinical psychiatrist. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Schaubhut Osborn, Jackson; four sons, Retus Osborn, Herndon, Va., Stephen Osborn, San Antonio, Texas, Lyman Osborn, Roseland, and Phillip Osborn, Mobile, Ala.; two stepsons, Marlin McGehee, Ethel, and Michael E. McGehee, Beaumont, Texas; a daughter, Holly Osborn Maurterer, Baton Rouge; a brother, A.B. Osborn, Elizabeth; and nine grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents, Retus W. Osborn Jr. and Leontine Osborn, who were from Roseland; and a nephew, David Osborn, who was from Elizabeth. Visiting was at Charlet Funeral Home Inc., Zachary, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday. Visiting at the funeral home from 8:30 a.m. until services at 10 a.m. Friday. He was a life fellow with the American Psychiatric Association, LSU medical and band alumni, member of Louisiana Psychiatric Medical Association, Rapides Parish Medical Society, Cenla Psychiatric Society, former member of Baton Rouge Psychiatric Society and East Feliciana Medical Society. In Alexandria, he was a life member of VFW Post 1736, and a member of the Moose Lodge and Calvary Baptist Church. Family would like to extend a special appreciation to Dr. W.D. Goodin and Dr. John Sams. Pallbearers will be Jesse Donze, James Odom, Michael McGehee, Perry Morton, Stephen Osborn, Phillip Osborn and Leonard Wilson. Honorary pallbearers are Worth Wilkinson, M.D., W.D. Goodin, M.D., John Sams, M.D., and the medical staff physicians at Veterans Administration Medical Center in Alexandria and Cenla Psychiatric Association.
