He was a native of Shreveport and an attorney. He was a U.S. Navy veteran having served in World War II as an electrician's mate first class. He was discharged from the U.S. Navy Amphibious Force with 4 Stars for the D-Day Invasion of the Gilbert Islands, Marshall Islands, Marianas Islands and Okinawa. He also served aboard one the of the first ships to Japan after the war in the occupation of Japan. He is survived by his children, Elizabeth Pate Piner of Covington, Creg and Mitchell Pate, both of Slidell, and John Pate of Ponchatoula; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by one son, Paul Pate; his parents, Lena Humphrey and Aubrey L. Pate; and one sister, Winnie Rae Fedrowisch. The funeral was today at Bultman Funeral Home, 3338 St. Charles Ave., New Orleans, and burial was in St. Bernard Memorial Gardens Cemetery. *************************************************************************** Obituary published in The Advocate (Baton Rouge) on: 7/13/2003 PATE, SHIRLEY HUHN A resident and native of Hammond, she died Friday, July 11, 2003, at her residence. She was 69. Visiting at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home chapel, Hammond, from 9 a.m. until religious service at 11 a.m. Monday, conducted by the Rev. Tom Cobb. Interment in Greenlawn Cemetery. Survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Pate Piner, Covington; a son, John Newton Pate, Ponchatoula; a brother, James Huhn, Covington; six grandchildren, Staci Anding, Lindsay and Jared Pate, and Robert, Morgan and Katye Piner; and two great-grandchildren, Grayson and Marin Anding. Preceded in death by her son, Paul Pate; parents, Alexander and Annie Rogers Huhn; and a brother, Alex Huhn Jr. She was a retired educator with the Tangipahoa Parish School Board. She received her bachelor's and master's degrees from Southeastern Louisiana University. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Hammond, Kappa Delta Gamma sorority and Louisiana Retired Teachers Association. ***************************************************************************
