PENLAND, BERNICE R.
Columbia, S.C. - Bernice R. Penland, 89, died Nov. 24, 2000. She was a
native of Washington, N.C., a registered nurse, former chief nurse of the
maternity section at Doctor's Hospital, Miami, and was a member of
Washington Street United Methodist Church, former member of Daughters of
the American Revolution and the United Daughters of the Confederacy. 
Survivors include two sons, Julian Straughan Downing, Shreveport, Ross
Early Downing, Hammond; daughter, Lydia Downing Clary, Columbia, S.C.;
eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. A memorial service was
held Nov. 26, 2000, at Washington Street United Methodist Church, 
Columbia, S.C. Donations or memorials may be made to Washington Street
United Methodist Church, 1401 Washington St., Columbia, S.C. 29201,
Carolina Children's Home, P.O. Box 4465, Columbia, S.C. 29240, or to a
charity of one's choice.
