A native of New Orleans and a former resident of Hammond, she graduated from Hammond High School in 1948 and received a bachelor's of arts degree from Southeastern Louisiana College in 1952. She taught in the Calcasieu Parish School System for 30 years before retiring in 1985. Her family described her as "a loving, devoted and beloved wife and mother." Survivors include her husband, L.J. Perkins of DeQuincy; a son, Dennis A. Perkins of Dhahran, Saudi, Arabia; four sisters, Mary S. Whynot of San Antonio, Texas, Vita S. Hapiuk of Groveland, Calif., Jennie S. Rogers of Baton Rouge, Esther S. Truxillo of Mobile, Ala.; two brothers, Joseph Signorelli of Fairhope, Ala., and Sam Signorelli of Hammond. He was born on Wednesday, October 13, 1926, in Minnesota, son of the late William and Mary Ann Ibberson Perkins, and moved to Hammond, Louisiana as a youth with his family. He enlisted at the age of 16 in the U.S. Coast Guard and escorted convoys across the North Atlantic providing protection from German U-boat attacks. When the Coast Guard discovered his true age and discharged him, he promptly enlisted in the Marine Corps and spent the rest of the war fighting the Japanese in the South Pacific. Following his military service he briefly enrolled in college, but soon left and became a master brick mason. A back injury led to a distinguished career of over 40 years in law enforcement working for the U.S. Border Patrol, Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, Louisiana State Police and Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office. He retired from both the State Police and Sheriff's Office with the rank of Major. His many interests included competitive sports, hunting, and fishing. He was a longtime LHSAA football official, an umpire for Ponchatoula youth baseball and a founding member of Ponchatoula Little Conference Football. He was a lifetime member of the Ponchatoula Volunteer Fire Department and served 12 years on the town council. He was also an ordained Baptist minister and a member of the Free Masons. Surviving are his wife, Bernice Walker Perkins and 2 sons, Marion Fannaly, Michael Fannaly; daughter, Cindy Fannaly; 5 grandchildren, 3 great- grandchildren.
