Mrs. Ella is a native of Hammond, and a resident of Covington for many years. She is the daughter of the late Charles and Inez Eady O'Neill. Spouse of the late Clyde B. Bankston and the late Luke Pingno. Mrs. Ella Pingno was a active member of Mandeville Christian Fellowship Church. Mrs. Ella is survived by her loving children, David and Edna Bankston, Jerry and Deborah Bankston, and Ricky and Laura Hano Sr. Mrs. Pingno is also preceded by her brothers, Lucius, Charles Jr., Owen and Christopher O'Neill; and her sisters, Florene Baham and Ann Latino. Survivors include Harold, Paul, Donnie and Tommy O'Neill, Inez Randall, Geneva Jagneaux and Peggy McMorris; grandchildren, Amanda Sherman, Wyman, Brad, Daniel and Lindsay Bankston, Ricky Hano Jr., Tiffany Miller and Faylen Elice Hano; great-grandchildren, Zachary and Austin Sherman, Brennan and Ella Rose Bankston, and Victoria Hano. Funeral services were held today at Mandeville Christian Fellowship Church, 1211 Highway 1088, Mandeville. In lieu of flowers, donations to Mandeville Christian Fellowship Church to benefit St. Jude Medical Center. Interment in Colonial Cemetery, Independence. Survived by his wife, Beatrice Farlouis Pingno, Independence; a daughter, Margaret Wascom, Independence; a son, Emile J. Pingno Jr., Independence; three grandchildren, Scottie Wascom, Chad Wascom and Jason Pingno; and a brother, Luke Pingno Sr., Independence. Preceded in death by his mother, Mary Ann Manichia Pingno; father, Mario Pingno; an infant son; two brothers, Tony and Angelo Pingno; and two sisters, Bena Cambetta and Josie Carreca. Chief of police of Independence from 1948 to 1980 and employed by the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office from 1980 to 1996, he died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, at his home. He was 79 and a native and resident of Independence. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a survivor of the Bataan Death March and a prisoner of war for three years and six months. He was awarded two Purple Hearts and a Prisoner of War Medal. Visitation was at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home, Hammond, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday. Visiting at the funeral home from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Friday. Religious services at Mater Dolorosa Catholic Church, Independence, at 10:30 a.m. Friday, conducted by the Rev. McDuffy. Entombment in Colonial Mausoleum. Survived by his wife, Lynn Mathews Allen Pingno; two sons, Luke M. Pingno Jr. and Jesse Pingno; and a stepson, Walter Hiram Allen III, all of Independence; a stepdaughter, Lynn Abigail Mulcahy, St. Paul, Minn.; four grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren. Preceded in death by a granddaughter, Angel Pingno; three brothers, Tony, Angelo and Emile Pingno; and two sisters, Bena Cambetta and Josie Carreca. He was a member of Mater Dolorosa Catholic Church, American Legion, Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars and served for eight years with the Independence City Council. ***************************************************************************
