He served in the 11th Airborne with the U.S. Army in the Korean conflict. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Pistorius of Hammond; one son, Robert Travis Pistorius of Hammond; one daughter, Wendy Pistorius Annina of Hammond; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild; two sisters, Shirley Ann Andrus of Hammond and Sandra Sheets of Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Travis Orville and Helen Josephine Damery Pistorius; and one brother, Ronald Pistorius. The funeral was Satruday. A resident of Hammond, Mr. Merlin A. Pistorius, 74, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009, at North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond. He was born on Saturday, Nov. 10, 1934, in Little Rock, Ark., son of Lester and Louise Allen Pistorius. Mr. Pistorius was a lay minister and active parishioner of Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Hammond and an active member of Knights of Columbus Council 2952. He also was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, where he served as coordinator of the Uniforms for Kids Program, and a leader of the Optimist Clubs of both Hammond and Monroe. Mr. Pistorius retired after 40 years of service with Louisiana Department of Transportation, having finished his career as the chief engineer of maintenance after serving as the district administrator in Hammond from 1984 to 1993. Mr. Pistorius was also active with various other engineering societies, serving on the boards for both the Louisiana Engineering Society and the state Board of Registration for Professional Engineers, which he served as chairman from 1999 to 2000. Mr. Pistorius also served on the Tangipahoa Parish Port Commission for several years. Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Shirley B. Pistorius; daughter, Denise Arceneaux; daughters and sons-in-law, Janet and Hank Boggs, and Carole and Kevin Bucknum; sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen and Lee Pistorius, and Tom and Susan Pistorius; 13 grandchildren; brother, Michael Pistorius; and sister, Sybil Colicchio. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Rita Tindall. Friends will be received at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Hammond, on Saturday, Feb. 28, from 11 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 1 p.m. Entombment in the Rose Memorial Park Mausoleum in Hammond.
