A loving mother and a retired registered nurse, she was born Nov. 9, 1923, in Mount Hermon. She married Carl Powell in 1947 after finishing nurses' training at McComb City Hospital. Dot was one of 10 children born to Arthur and Minnie Fortenberry. She is survived by sons, Warren Powell, of Denham Springs, and Mark Powell and wife Maureen, of Baton Rouge; and a daughter and son- in-law, Carla and Leonard Wainwright, of Hammond. Also surviving are brothers, Hugh and Marion Fortenberry, of Mount Hermon; a sister, Edna Comish, of Baton Rouge; and a sister-in-law, Olive Appleton, of Buffalo, Okla. She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Jamie Powell; a brother, James Fortenberry; sisters, Eran Pocorello, who was of Baton Rouge, Jean Newman, who was of Greensburg, and Ginger Ford, who was of Hammond. "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." *************************************************************************** Obituary published in The Hammond Daily Star on: 1/3/2007 POWELL, DOROTHY REBEKAH ANDERSON Dorothy Rebekah Anderson Powell, 100, died Monday, December 18, 2006, at her home in Albany. She was born in Cisco, Texas April 12, 1906 to Charles and Nell Anderson. She attended school in Abilene, Texas and graduated summa cum laude from Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene. She was a life long member of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). She was an accomplished musician having studied piano from the age of 4. Following graduation from college in 1927 she attended the New York Institute of Musical Arts in concert piano. When she returned home to Abilene following her studies in New York City, she taught music and later taught in the New Mexico public school system. Dorothy married her college sweetheart, W.J. Powell (Dub) in 1931 and moved to New Orleans, LA, then Syracuse, NY and later Long Beach, CA with his work. Returning to Louisiana in 1941, "Dot" taught school while Dub farmed. She received her certification as a librarian from Southeastern LA College in Hammond, LA and served as public school librarian and also librarian at Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in New Orleans. Mrs. Powell retired twice, once from public school teaching and later as librarian of Holy Ghost Catholic School in Hammond, LA. She said, on retirement the second time, that work was interfering with her golfing. Following the death of her husband in 1964, Dorothy traveled extensively with family and friends. She toured Europe with her long-time friend and neighbor, Emily Smith of Hammond, LA and Australia with Yvonne Faller of Ponchatoula, LA. She visited Alaska and Canada and traveled to Albany, Oregon numerous summers where her daughter, Nancy, lives. Dorothy moved to Albany in 1994 and lived at the Alterra Villas, later moving to Alterra Wynwood. She was preceded in death by her cherished parents, brother and his wife, Loyce and Dovie Anderson, husband, Dub, and three greatly missed grandchildren, Denise and Clifton Powell and Rob Schmidt. She is survived by two sons and their wives, Chike and Thejoal Powell of West Melbourne, Florida, Jeff Powell and Susan Rottman of Roswell, New Mexico, two daughters and their husbands, Nancy Powell and Scott Pirie, of Albany, and Judy Powell and Ray Sibley of Kokomo, Mississippi, two beloved nieces and their husbands, Sue and Walter Hill of Jarreau, LA and Neilene and Charles Chapman of Victoria, TX. She was immensely proud of her seven surviving grandchildren, 12 great-grand- children and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Memorial Services will be held at the First Christian Church at 3:30pm, Thursday, December 21, 2006.
