William "Billy" Monroe Quin passed away in the early morning hours of Wednesday, April 26, 2006, at his Kentwood home. Visiting was at McKneely Funeral Home, Kentwood, on Friday, April 28, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Visiting at First Baptist Church of Kentwood on Saturday from noon until service at 1 p.m. Interment in Woodland Cemetery in Kentwood. Billy's beloved wife of more than 40 years, Donna Hornsby Quin, preceded him in death only seven months ago. Billy is survived by his two daughters, Lisa Anne Quin, Raleigh, N.C., and Christiana Quin Wharton, Madison, Miss.; a son, William M. Quin II, Brandon, Miss.; five grandchildren, Olivia Claire Quin, Tinley Grace Wharton, Kathryn Renee Derr, Brenden Scott Derr and Joshua Keith Derr; a brother, Buster Quin; and a sister, Beverly Quin Jones, Amite. Billy Quin was a 1959 graduate of Greensburg High School, where he was an All-State Football player and champion public speaker. During 1960-61, Billy served as state president of Future Farmers of America. He graduated in 1963 from Southeastern Louisiana University, where he served as student body president his senior year. In the fall of 1963, Billy entered law school at Loyola University in New Orleans. To finance his education, Billy worked evenings on the shipping docks at Red Ball Motor Freight while his wife, Donna, worked days at a local department store. Billy graduated Loyola in 1966 with a bachelor of laws degree. Billy Quin joined the district attorney's office of the 21st Judicial District in 1971 after spending the initial years of his career in New Orleans and then as a young lawyer in Kentwood. He remained an assistant district attorney until the mid-1990s, serving the bulk of his tenure under District Attorney Duncan Kemp. As a testament to his commitment to fairness and justice, Billy returned to public service in recent years as an assistant public defender. Billy also served as city attorney of his hometown of Kentwood and as the personal attorney of countless people. Compassion and wisdom served as the defining characteristics of Billy Quin's 40-year legal career. As Billy once said in a Baton Rouge Morning Advocate expose, "The essential ingredients of an assistant DA are compassion and wisdom, which should be used not only to protect society but as guidance in helping young people revert from their mistakes." Among Billy's proudest achievements was his recommendation of outstanding Kentwood basketball star, Collis Temple Jr., to Press Maravich, basketball coach of LSU. Temple went on to become the first African-American basketball player in LSU history. Far more important to him than his many professional achievements, Billy was a devoted husband and father of three. He never missed a dance recital for one of his daughters or a sporting event for his son. As anyone who knows him will attest, Billy loved his wife, Donna, as dearly as one man can love his spouse. Billy Quin will long be missed by those he leaves behind, family and friends alike.
