Bernice S. Raby confessed and accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Sixty-Aid Baptist Church by the Rev. Willie Pitcher Sr., pastor. Bernice S. Raby was a member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the Rev. Charles T. Smith. She served on the Deaconess Board for many years. Bernice S. Raby's favorite scripture was Psalms 23:1 "The Lord is my shepherd." She was a Christian woman who lived a holy and righteous life. Bernice S. Raby reared her children in the ways of the Lord, and invested her life in her family. Her grandchildren considered it an honor to call her Big Mama, and she always told them to "be good." To cherish her memory, she leaves behind her three daughters and a son-in-law, Elnora B. and James Smith, of Daly City, Calif.; Jeanetta R. Lands, of Baton Rouge; and Renetta R. Leverett, of Hammond; a son, John A. Bell, of Rex, Ga.; godson, Felton Coleman Jr., of Baton Rouge; three brothers and a sister-in-law, Clifford Smith, Edward and Gwen Smith and Ulysses Smith, all of Baton Rouge; four grandchildren, Shannon B. Walker and husband Robert, of Baker; Christina A. Leverett and Courtney A. Leverett, both of Hammond; and Jontavious A. Bell, of Rex; four great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild; and two sisters-in-law, Carrie Bashful and Mattie Williams. Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Raby; parents, Ulysses B. Smith and Elnora S. Smith; and a sister, Francis Smith. She is also survived by nieces and nephews; and a special caretaker, Elaine Smith, of Hammond. Services will be held at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, 185 Eddie Robinson Sr. Drive, Charles T. Smith, pastor, on Sunday, May 1, at 7 p.m., officiated by the Rev. Clee E. Lowe. Dismissal services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. Interment will be held in Rose Memorial Park Cemetery in Hammond. Visiting at Greater Sixty Aid Baptist Church, 665 Gardere Lane, on Saturday, Oct. 1, from 9 a.m. until religious service at 11 a.m., conducted by the Rev. James R. Barrett, Sr. Burial in Roselawn Cemetery. Survived by her husband, Herman F. Raby; two daughters, Madelyn Beatty and husband Carlos, of Houston, and Tonya Stelly and husband Herman, of Gonzales; five sisters, Esther Dixon, Diane Stewart and Glenda Foxx, all of Baton Rouge, Alma Jean Allen, of White Castle, and Joyce Boatner, of Hammond; two brothers, Joseph Thomas and wife Carol, of Plaquemine, and Johnny Foxx, of Bayou Goula; three grandchildren, Madison and McKenzi Stelly, of Gonzales, and Cameron Beatty, of Houston; and a host of other relatives and friends.
