He was a resident of Hammond and before retiring, worked for more than 30 years as an employee and supervisor for the city of Hammond. He was a World War II veteran having served in the United States Army. Mr. Reed lived a full and passionate life, touching people around him genuinely with encouraging words. He is survived by his wife, Idella Reed; 10 sons, Leon (Nettie), Henry (Kim), Alfred James (Velvilane), Edward (Gwandolyn), Reginald, Albert, Kennedy (Meshel), Claude (Lorraine), Adrian (Tonia), Robert (Teshawn), 9 daughters, Evelyn (Walter) Daniels, Kathryn (James) Mack, Cassandra (Mack) Dillingham, Barbara (Rick) Gill, Pat, Georgette (Timothy) Daniels, Belinda (Jerry) Cox, Claudette (Ronald) Matthews, Margaret (Pernell) Dykes; 2 sisters, Elvena Reed Bryant, Sylvia Reed Robinson; 53 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Godivia Reed; his first wife, Maggie Lindsey; brothers Walter and Henry; and sister Ruby. Born in Springdale, Ar, he was a Hammond resident since 2005, and was being cared for at Country Manor Nursing Home in St. Francisville until a recent illness. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Bell Bayless Reed of Hammond; two daughters, Pamela Ann Reed Shepherd of Downsville, La., and Deborah Jane Reed Teel of Humble, Tx., and a son, Charles Kent "Chuck" Reed of Hammond; a sister, Betty Lou Reed Smith of Weatherford, Tx., seven grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Dr. Michael Dean Reed of New Orleans. Mr. Reed was a B-24 Liberator bomber pilot in the Army Air Corps during WWII, flying 33 combat missions in the South Pacific theatre, for which he was awarded two Bronze Stars and the Air Medal during the New Guinea and Bismarck-Archipelago Campaigns. His professional career was with J.C. Penny Co. as an assistant manager before the war, and returned as a store manager in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Texas and Louisiana. He was a member of the Masons and the Eastern Star, an Ordained Deacon of the Baptist organization, and a member of Woodland Park Baptist Church in Hammond. in 1995, at the age of 72, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond as the oldest graduate in SLU history. Visitation for family and friends will be held at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home in Hammond on Saturday, September 7th from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Joseph Hospice, Carpenter House, in Baton Rouge, or the Louisiana American Red Cross. Reed II, 75, St. Helena High School's first football coach, died Saturday, March 6, 2004, at Cayuga Medical Center. Born in New Orleans, he married Eunice Paddio in 1949. The couple had five children, Clarence Reed III of Columbus, Ohio, Henry Reed of Cavite City, Philippines, Bertrand Reed of Ithaca, N.Y., and Ce'cile Reed-Randolph of Keller, Texas; and Deidre Reed-Dyson, who preceded him in death. He was a graduate of Grambling State University and Louisiana State University. He was a teacher in the St. Helena Parish School District in Greensburg for 20 years. He was an active member of the Louisiana Interscholastic Athletic and Literary Organization, president to the St. Helena Parish Education Association of the Louisiana Education Association and the National Education Association, a Boy Scout master, a 4-H leader and trustee and member of the Gospel Choir at Turner Chapel AME Church, a member of the Saddle and Bridle Horseman's Club and charter member of the St. Helena Parish Employees Federal Credit Union, a civil rights activist, as well as a "sundown" farmer. Before beginning a second career at Cornell University in 1972, he was employed by Floridana Community Action Agency serving Tangipahoa, Washington and St. Helena parishes. During his Cornell years, he was an adjunct professor and director of the Committee on Special Educational Projects in the Human Service Studies Department for the College of Human Ecology. He retired in 1994. His Ithaca community service included the Ithaca Planning Board and the Ithaca Urban Renewal Agency. He was a active member of the National Association of African American RVers Association; New York Ravens chapter. Other survivors include his wife, Beverly J.C. Reed; one sister, Joycelyn Hart of Ithaca; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; stepchildren, Wells and James Didlick and Gail Chavis and Julie Didlick, all of Cincinnati, Ohio; and three stepgrand- children. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Clarence H. and Jersey Johnson Reed. The Rev. Barry Downing conducted a memorial service March 20 at First Presbyterian Church, Ithaca. Burial will be April 17 at Mount Olivet Cemetery and Mausoleum, 4000 Norman Mayer Ave., New Orleans.
