A banker with Independence Bank, he died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, after a battle against renal cell kidney cancer. He was born July 12, 1933, in Cloverport, Ky. He graduated from Holy Name High School in Henderson, Ky., in 1951. He served in the U.S. Navy in the Korean War. The ship he served on was part of "Operation Castle," a nuclear weapons testing conducted at Enewetak and Bikini Atolls in 1954. This particular group of sailors are now referred to as "atomic veterans." With his GI bill he attended and graduated from Brescia College, now University, in 1959, with a bachelor of science degree in accounting. He was also a graduate of University of Wisconsin Banking School. He began his accounting career as assistant treasurer for Kosmos Cement Co. in Louisville, Ky. He entered banking in 1969 as controller of Owensboro National Bank. In 1971, he, Ed Reisz and Jim Zimmerman purchased two Western Kentucky banks, Farmers and Merchants Bank in Livermore, Ky., and Providence State Bank in Providence, Ky. He served as president of Farmers & Merchants Bank with Mr. Zimmerman presiding over Providence State Bank. Upon Mr. Zimmerman's death in 1976, Mr. Reid became president of both banks. In 1996, the two banks merged under the one name of Independence Bank, where he remained as president CEO. He was very active in civic and charitable organizations, with a particular focus on economic development. He served on boards with the Green River Area Development District, McLean County Chamber of Commerce, McLean County Industrial Foundation, Community Foundation of Owensboro-Daviess County, Glenmary Sisters Charitable Trust and Catholic Charities. He and his wife, Mitzi Reisz Reid, were married for 46 years. They had seven children: Albert Reisz Reid of Owensboro, married to Dorothy Carrico Reid, Tracy Kathleen Reid of Lexington, Christopher Charles Reid of Owensboro, married to Janet Searcy Reid, Kelly Reid Jackson of Frankfort, Ky., married to David Allen Jackson, Cathy Reid Switzer of Owensboro, married to John Todd Switzer, Kevin Louis Reid of Louisville, married to Tammy Zippay Reid, and David Brian Reid of Owensboro, married to Julie Emery Reid; 15 grandchildren and an expected grandchild. He is also survived by his father, Charles Mormon Reid of Owensboro; a brother, John William Reid of Gonzales; and a sister, Joyce Reid Maloney of Louisville. He was preceded in death by his mother, Kathleen Elder Reid, in 1993. He was an avid reader and his hobby, which he loved, was his work.
