She was born on Monday, Sept. 17, 1928, in Kentwood, daughter of the late Otis Bennett and Lennie Cutrer Bennett. She graduated from Southeastern Louisiana University with a bachelor's and master's degrees plus 30 in education. She served on a team to establish the nationally recognized B'Yon program for talented/gifted children. She was devoted to educating the youth of Tangipahoa Parish for 25 years. Surviving are her husband, Donald G. Rhodes; son and daughter-in-law, Lanis and Anita Yarbrough III; two daughters and sons-in-law, Beth and Craig Lieberman and Leann and Donnie Pickens; four grandchildren, Scott Pickens, Amanda Yarbrough, Tory Lieberman and Laine Lieberman. Preceded in death by her parents, Otis and Lennie Cutrer Bennett; first husband, Lanis Yarbrough Jr.; and sister, Marion Gill. Friends will be received at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home, Hammond, on Sunday, July 13, from noon until service at 2 p.m. in the chapel, officiated by Dr. Lonnie Wascom. Born in Newark, New Jersey October 8, 1926, he was the son of Edna E. and George J. Rhodes. He was a World War II veteran in the United States Navy. After earning the B.A. at the University of Redlands and the Master of Arts in Political Science from Louisiana State University, Donald taught a wide variety of Government classes in the Department of History and Government at Southeastern Louisiana University from 1965 to 1996, retiring at the rank of Associate Professor. His experiences in World War II, his wide-ranging world travels (he visited over 100 countries), his voracious consumption of history and news about current events, his skill as a lecturer, and his congenial personality made him a favorite among students. He was a loyal colleague and wisely mentored younger faculty at Southeastern, maintaining close ties with the Department long after retirement. Donald enriched thousands of lives over the course of his career. He is survived by his step-children Lanis Yarbrough III and wife Anita, Beth Yarbrough Lieberman and husband Craig, and Leann Yarbrough Pickens; step-grandchildren, Scott Pickens and wife Ashley, Amanda Yarbough, Tory Lieberman, and Laine Lieberman; step-great grand daughter Brylee Pickens; brothers, Gerald J. Rhodes and wife Ruth, Eugene C. Rhodes and wife June; nephew Jonathan Rhodes and wife Kristin; nieces Kathryn Kilpatrick and husband Andrew, Stephanie Cahill and husband Justin; five great nephews and nieces. Preceded in death by his beloved wife Agnes Bennett Yarbrough Rhodes, parents Edna E. and George J. Rhodes, twin brother Douglas A. Rhodes, sister Joyce N.
