George Rice Jr., 54 of Hammond and a native of Independence, died April 22, 2007. The funeral will be Saturday at N.A. Hico, Texas -- James William Rice Jr., 70, died Sunday, May 30, 2004, at his home. Born in Coleman County, a son of James William Rice Sr. and Mary Amanda Jennings Rice, he was a graduate of Santa Anna High School. He received a bachelor of fine arts degree from the University of Texas at Austin, a master of education degree from Howard Payne College, and a master of fine arts degree from Stephen F. Austin University. He wrote and illustrated children's books and novels with Pelican Publishing Co., and taught art at Southeastern Louisiana University, Louisiana State University and Dallas Baptist University. He was also a band director at Hico and Shamrock high schools, a member of Natalbany Baptist Church in Natalbany and a member of the Western Writers of America. Survivors include his wife, Martha Oustad Rice of Hico; his children, Zel Rice of Tickfaw, Maria Weaver of Hamilton, Texas, Lyn Rice of Blanket, Texas, Patti Rice of Alexandria, Va., and Jason Rice of Stephenville, Texas; one brother, Eddy Rice of Brownwood, Texas; one sister, Loretta Angel of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Visitation will be today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Riley Funeral Home, Hamilton. A graveside service will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Center Valley Cemetery, Hamilton County. The Rev. LaWayne Curtis Rice Sr., the only son of Earnest Penns and Mary Rice, was born April 21, 1981. LaWayne accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Oak Grove Baptist Church No. 1 by the Rev. Donald E. Montgomery Sr. in Zachary. He attended Northeast High School, and later attended Job Corps in Oklahoma City, Okla. He entered into holy matrimony in 2006 to Sharletrice Rice. He was a skillful barber, who was loved and admired by all his clients. He was a certified hydro-blaster. LaWayne was a devoted father, son, brother, uncle, and cousin, and a friend to everyone who knew him. La Wayne is affectionately known as "Curt" to all. He leaves to cherish his wife, Sharletrice Rice; two daughters, Aqueilya Hill, of Baton Rouge, and Kashara Blackman, of Gloster, Miss.; three stepdaughters, Shydrica, Taneshia, and Veonca Callegari, all of Baton Rouge; a son, Lawayne C. Rice Jr., of Baker; a stepson, Troid Callegari, of Baton Rouge; loving mother, Mary Rice, and father who reared him, Jessie L. Richardson, of Zachary; a great-grandmother, Martha J. Rice, Natchez, Miss.; three sisters, Charmaine, Nijarea, and Nila Rice, all of Zachary; a stepsister, Chantel Richardson, of Baton Rouge; a stepbrother, Deltoh Banks, of Clinton; three aunts, Julia (Stanley) Dinet, and Lizzie "Lisa" (Joseph) Brown, all of Zachary, Martha Jane (Martin) Johnson, of Slaughter; two uncles, William "Lonel" (Terry) Rice, of Amite, Samuel (Accelyn) Hickman, of Houston; a niece, Charlaysia Rice, of Zachary; and two nephews, Nytrell Rice and Braylon Edwards, both of Zachary.
