Audrey Mae Harvey Ricks, 65, a native of Tangipahoa Parish, was called to heaven from her home surrounded by her loving family on October 9, 2007. She was an active member of New Home Family Worship Center, under the leadership of Pastor Darryl V. Phoenix. She believed that all men are unique and handmade by God and deserved to have the same social, economic and educational opportunities. She was the first African-American to be employed as a clerk with J C Penney and helped to break segregation barriers by joining the Civil Rights Movement in the early 1960's. She participated in one of the first organized demonstrations in Hammond by taking part in a sit-in conducted at the White Way Cafe, where to the astonishment of her mother who was employed as a cook at the same location; she marched into the establishment, seated herself and demanded to be served. She was a graduate of Greenville Park High School. She attended Southern University in Baton Rouge, La., where in less than four years, she received undergraduate degrees in both Special Education and Early Childhood Development. She earned her Master's Degree in Counseling from Southern University as well. She attained her Plus 30 from Southeastern Louisiana University. She loved working with children and felt that every child could be taught to learn. Her 34 year career as an educator withing the Tangipahoa parish School System included her first teaching position at Champ Cooper Elementary School, C.M. Fagan Special Services Center, Pupil Appraisal, Tangipahoa Parish Magnet High School, Woodland Park Early Learning Center and Crystal Academy where she was employed until her untimely illness. She is survived by her loving husband, Cooper Ricks Jr., a cherished mother, Helen Mae Harvey, five devoted children, daughters, Gwandolyn Banks (Edward) Reed, Van Banks (Illya) Simpson of Hammond, sons, Troy L. Banks of Lithonia, Ga., Bobby P. Banks of Hammond, Victor D. (Brenda) Banks of Carrollton, Ga. She leaves her siblings, Oretha (Curtis) Ruffin, Reverend Elijah (Enola) Harvey Jr., Betty Ann (Thomas) Holland, Andrew Harvey, Elder James E.
