Sidney J. Romero, Ph.D., 83, died Monday, Nov. 6, 2000, at his home. He was a member and past president of the Hammond Kiwanis Club, member, 4th degree, and past grand knight with the Knights of Columbus, John F. Kennedy Council, a 1939 graduate of Southwestern University, attended Loyola University and was a 1942 graduate with a masters degree from Louisiana State University. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, was appointed chaplain's assistant and served Mass at St. Peter's in Rome. He served on the first Holy Ghost Catholic Church school board and was elected representative to the Lay Congress of the Baton Rouge Diocese. He received his doctorate degree from LSU and taught at Oklahoma A&M, LSU and Southeastern Louisiana University from 1949 until retirement where he served as professor, department head and vice president. Survivors include his wife, Virginia Butler Romero, Hammond; daughter, Rose Mary Romero Mize, Gallatin, Tenn.; three sons, Raymond S. Romero, New Orleans, M. Ross Romero, Mobile, Ala., and Francis "Randy" Romero, Hammond; five grand- children; and a brother, Ned J. Romero, Palm Desert, Calif. A son, Sidney Stephen Romero, preceded him in death. Visitation will be at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home, Hammond, tonight from 6 to 9 and Wednesday from 8 until 9:45 a.m. The Rev. Gerald Coverdale will conduct the funeral at 10 a.m. at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, and entombment will be in Greenlawn Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Holy Ghost Catholic Church Building Fund, 601 N. Oak St., Hammond 70401. *************************************************************************** Obituary published in The Hammond Daily Star on: 8/12/2007 ROMERO, VIRGINIA "GINGER" BUTLER Virginia "Ginger" Butler Romero, died early Saturday morning, August 11, 2007 following a long illness. She died at home, surrounded by loving friends and family. Ginger was born on September 13, 1928 in West Monroe, LA, but has lived in Hammond since 1949. She is a published author of two books: The Louisiana Strawberry Story and The Catholic Story in the Hammond Area of Louisiana. Ginger worked in child welfare and as a newspaper reporter before becoming a teacher at Hammond High School, Albany High School, and Southeastern Louisiana University. Ginger was one of the earliest reporters at The Hammond Press, a newspaper that evolved into The Daily Star. Ginger married Southeastern Louisiana University Professor Dr. Sidney Romero in 1947. Their home was the first built on the north side of North General Pershing. Ginger was an active member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church and St. Albert Catholic Student Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Sidney Romero, her son, Steve Romero, and her mother, Virginia Butler. She is survived by her daughter, Rose Mary Romero Mize, her sons, Ray, Ross, and Randy, and by five grandchildren, Andy Mize, Molly Mize Akers, Katerina Mize, Caitlin Romero, and Kevin Romero. Visitation will be Sunday, August 12, 2007 at Harry McKneely & Son in Hammond from 4 pm til 7 pm, and after 8 am on Monday until 10:40 am. An 11 am Mass of Christian Burial at St. Albert Catholic Student Center will be held Monday, August 13, 2007, conducted by Rev. Randy Cuevas, Rev. Ross Romero, S.J. and Rev. Wallace Gainey.
