She was born April 15, 1921, in Norwood, to Johnnie Laura O'Rourke and Jesse Shelmire Miller. She graduated from Southeastern Louisiana University and was a member of Kappa Rho. Mrs. Scarle was a Rose of Southeastern Louisiana University. She was a gourmet cook, loved to entertain and gave beautiful dinner parties. She made everyone feel so welcomed in her home. She was a devoted wife, dedicated mother and faithful friend. Mrs. Scarle was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Ponchatoula and The Women's Society of Christian Service. She taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Scarlet Scarle Hebert and Thomas Eads Hebert M.D., and Marsha Scarle "Hoppy" Black and Gary Louis Black Sr.; and son, John Sherman "Brother" Scarle Jr. She is survived by seven grand- children, Elisabeth Hebert Collazos, of Culver City, Calif., Thomas Eads Hebert, Jr., D.D.S., of Lafayette, Gary Louis Black Jr., Barrett John Black, Florence Louise Scarle, Laura Cason Scarle and Ann Elizabeth Scarle, all of Baton Rouge. Mrs. Scarle is also survived by great-grandchildren, Rene Ovideo Collazos, Curtis Creed Collazos, Katie Scarlett Collazos, Avery Elizabeth Hebert, Alexander Eads Hebert, Sophia Mary Black, Naomi Elise Black, Julia Alexander Black, Pattison Marie Black and Gary Louis Black, III.; a sister, Nan Marie Smith, of Wayne, Pa.; a sister-in-law, Mary Ann St. Amant Scarle, of Hammond; three nieces, Mary Caroline "Colleen" Scarle, of Hammond, Mary Elizabeth Holton Lunn, of Shreveport and Patricia Miller, of Atlanta; and nephews, George Milford "Porgy" Scarle, of Fluker, John Marshall "Mike" Scarle, of Covington, John Mattingly Smith, of Longmont, Colo., Robert Jesse Andrews of Tallahassee, Fla., and Brady Miller of Atlanta, Georgia. She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, John Sherman Scarle Sr., D.D.S.; sister, Mary Elizabeth Andrews; brother, Jesse R. Miller; and nephew, Charles Lea Smith. Special thanks and gratitude to her caregiver and friend, Juanita Berry. A resident of Ponchatoula for 61 years, Dr. John Sherman Scarle Sr., 88, died at 5 a.m. Friday, May 30, 2008, at his home after a long battle with Parkinson's disease. He was born in Amite on Dec. 11, 1919, to Daisy Mae Morris and George Milford Scarle Sr. He attended LSU and was a member of Lambda Chi Fraternity. He graduated from Southeastern Louisiana University and Loyola Dental School. He was a veteran of World War II and served as captain in the U.S. Army Air Forces, stationed in the Philippine Islands. He practiced dentistry for 41 years and was a member of the Sixth District Dental Society and the Louisiana Dental Society. He helped establish the Ponchatoula Clinic. He was a member of the Ponchatoula Rotary Club and served as president. He received the award for perfect attendance for 50 years and was also the recipient of the Paul Harris Fellows award. Dr. Scarle was an avid LSU fan and was president of the Tangipahoa Parish Alumni Association and president of the Tangi Tigers. He received the Distinguished Citation Award from the LSU Athletic Department and was a member of the LSU Century Club. He served on the board of Central Progressive Bank. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Ponchatoula and taught Sunday school. He was the first president of the United Methodist Men. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Dr. Marshall M. Scarle, her loving parents Dr. Guy and Hilda Laville St.Amant, her adored older brothers and sisters-in law, Dr. Lyle and Monroe St.Amant and Dr. Alvin and Nancy St.Amant. MaryAnn is survived by daughter Mary Caroline "Colleen" Scarle; nieces Katherine St.Amant McClugage, Anna Wilkinson, Julie St.Amant, Marianne St.Amant, Susan Baumler, Scarlet Hebert, Hoppy Black and Betsy Lunn; and nephews, Joe, Bill, John, Guy, Jim and Marshall St.Amant and Porgy, Mike and John Scarle. Love and devotion to her family was second only to her faith. MaryAnn graduated from LSU with a Journalism degree in 1939. Her plan to be a girl reporter in New York City was immediately derailed after a blind date with Marshall. They married in 1941 and settled in Hammond after 4 years and 22 military moves during WWII. MaryAnn was very active in the community being a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, the Rosary Altar Society, the Wednesday Volunteers, The Round Table Club, the Hammond Garden Club, the Monday Bridge Club, the Tuesday Book Club, the Medical Auxiliary, the Southeast Louisiana Historical Association and an avid LSU Tigers fan. Her constant advice and solution to any problem big or small was "Put yourself in the hands of God and pray". Visitation will be held at Holy Ghost Catholic Church from 9:30 AM until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM on Friday, January 11, 2013. Interment will follow at Amite Memorial Gardens.
