Ronald Edward Schaerer, 74, of Denham Springs, died Friday, Aug. 6, 2010, at The Carpenter House of St. Joseph Hospice. He was born Sept. 19, 1935, in Monteagle, Tenn., son of the late Clarence and Quinnie Lappin Schaerer. Rev. Schaerer accepted the call to preach at age 16 and continued to minister until his death. He started his first church in Tuscaloosa, Ala., at age 19. He has been the pastor of Bible missionary churches through the years in Little Rock, Ark., Crossville, Tenn., Pleasant Grove, Ala., Ponchatoula, Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Denham Springs. Surviving are his wife, Patricia L. Schaerer; sons and daughters-in-law, Randall and Laurie Schaerer, and David and Debbie Schaerer; daughter and son-in-law, Denise and Dale Smith; stepsons and stepdaughter-in-law, Craig and Denise Root, and Will Root; step-daughters and stepsons-in-law, Melinda and Ray Sinclair, Sherry Root, Theresa and Rick Robinson, and Sandra Root; 18 grandchildren, Rebecca, Russell, Aaron, Christy, Justin, Megan, Erica, Christopher, Jeremy, Ryan, Bud, Tim, Matt, Heather, Jonathan, Kimberly, Katie and Dirk; six great-grandchildren, Robert, Brent, Daniel, Christopher, Kaitlyn and Savannah; sister, Glennie Cameron; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by first wife, Lois Davis Schaerer; brothers, Clarence and Walter Schaerer; and a sister, Cecilia Killingsworth. Friends will be received at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home in Hammond on Monday, Aug. 9, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and at the funeral home chapel Tuesday, Aug. 10, from 8 a.m. until services at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Spencer Johnson, the Rev. Bill Whited and the Rev. Melvin Mitchell officiating. Interment will follow in the Sand Hill Cemetery in Ponchatoula. Rev. Schaerer was dearly loved by his family and all who knew him. The family would like to thank Dr. Michael Castine and the staff of Hematology Oncology Associates, Dr. Jeffery Hyde and the staff of Baton Rouge General Medical Center-Bluebonnet and The Carpenter House of St. Joseph Hospice.
