He was 53 and a native of Independence. He served in Vietnam as a military police officer in the U.S. Army Special Forces. Visiting at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home chapel, Hammond, 11 a.m. until religious services at 2 p.m. Thursday, conducted by a Dominican priest. Interment in Rose Memorial Cemetery. Survived by three brothers, Angelo Schifano Jr., Baton Rouge, Fred J. Schifano, Hammond, and Sammie Schifano, Brookhaven, Miss.; and two sisters, Mary Frances Hurst, Baton Rouge, and Olivia Mele, Hammond. He was preceded in death by his parents, Angelo Sr. and Leona Jones Schifano. He was a graduate of Independence High School. ************************************************************************* Obituary published in The Advocate (Baton Rouge) on: 7/30/2011 SCHIFANO, FRED JOSEPH Fred Joseph Schifano, 56, of Independence, died Wednesday, July 27, 2011, at Ochsner Medical Center of New Orleans. Fred was born Thursday, Aug. 19, 1954, in Hammond. He attended Hammond High School and served in the U.S. Marine Corps. Fred was a promoter of music and events. He enjoyed cooking, fishing, traveling and being with his friends and family. Surviving are sister, Olivia and husband Vito Mele; and brothers, Angelo and wife Robynn Schifano, and Sam Schifano. He was preceded in death by parents, Angelo and Leona Schifano; sister, Mary Hurst; brother, Anthony Schifano; nieces and nephews, Ryann Schifano, Neal Wilson, Jamey Felton, Timmy Schifano, Joe Mele and Angela Locicero.
