Visitation at First Baptist Church, Amite, on Monday, Oct. 3, from noon until religious service at 2 p.m., conducted by Tommy Hicks. Interment in Mulberry Street Cemetery, Amite. A family spokesman says, "In lieu of flowers, we strongly request that contributions be made to the Rev. E.D. Schilling Memorial Scholarship Fund, established at Louisiana College, in memory of Edwin's Baptist preacher grandfather. Contributions should be sent to Louisiana College, Institutional Development, P.O. Box 587, Pineville, LA 71359. This request is based upon Edwin's firm belief in this truth found in Isaiah 40:8 -- 'The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever.' We believe that there is no better way to honor someone who cherished the good news of the Savior Jesus Christ than to equip those who will share this Gospel with future generations." After attending elementary school in Greensburg, he graduated from Baton Rouge High School. Following military service in the U.S. Army Air Corps, he graduated from LSU Law School, where he was on the Law Review. Edwin practiced law in Amite from 1948 to 1986. Edwin was a senior deacon in the First Baptist Church of Amite and was active in denominational activities nationwide. He served as association moderator, was a member of the executive board of the Louisiana Baptist Convention and the board of trustees of Louisiana College. In 1994, he was recognized by the Louisiana Baptist Convention as an Outstanding Baptist Layman and in 1997, Louisiana College presented him with the Trustees' Distinguished Service Award. On the national level, Edwin was active in the Southern Baptist Convention Campers on Mission and helped to share the Gospel and build churches across the United States. He also was active in the Lay Renewal movement and participated in more than 100 Lay Renewal weekends in 11 states. In 90 of these, he was the leader/coordinator. One of Edwin's interests was genealogy, in which he used his legal skills researching real estate transactions and tracing family histories to accumulate a wealth of information about Amite and St. Helena Parish. For years, he wrote weekly newspaper columns: "Amite Now and Then," which was published in the Amite Tangi-Digest, and "Echoes From the Past," which was published in the St. Helena Echo. In 1997 and 1998, respectively, these articles and other genealogical information of this area were published in book form. He was a past president of the Amite Rotary Club and the Amite Chamber of Commerce. Edwin also served as a trustee of the Public Affairs Research Council and an advisory trustee of the Louisiana Moral and Civic Foundation. In 1994, he was the king of the Amite Oyster Festival. In his last years in Aurora at Cherry Creek Retirement Village, Edwin continued his enthusiastic involvement in community activities. In December 2001, he was recognized as the first Resident of the Month. After work in the local congregation, his favorite activity was video-taping the many programs offered at CCRV so that those who were not able to attend the program could see it later at his weekly program. He also entertained the residents with videos of various activities he had accumulated over the years and with his rotating humorous or inspirational Quote of the Day, which was displayed in the lobby. In 2001, he published his last book, "For Merry Hearts," which was a compilation of his favorite jokes and stories. The title was taken from Proverbs 17:22 -- "A merry heart doeth good like a medicine," and the rights were given to the Parkinson's Association of the Rockies for a fund-raising project. ************************************************************************* Obituary published in The Times-Picayune: 5/17/2007 SCHILLING, EMILE, JR.
