Aurelia Marie Schmidt, 59, died at her home in New Orleans last Tuesday. She was the daughter of Emma Gautre and Arthur Schmidt; sister of Dorothea Schmidt, and Mrs. H. Baskin of Bashon, Wash.; aunt of Richard C. Schmidt, Charlotte Baskin and Wilbert G. (Buddy) Schmidt of Hammond. A resident of Hammond, she died Thursday, May 5, 2005, at her home. She was 93 and a native of New Orleans. She is survived by her sister, Doris Schmidt, Hammond; three nieces, a nephew, three great- nephews, three great-nieces, seven great-great-nieces, three great-great- nephews, and a great-great-great-niece. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Marie Rickert Schmidt; and five sisters, Anita Schmidt Strader, Ruth Schmidt Fannaly, Katherine Schmidt Drude, Anna Schmidt Fendlason and Norma Schmidt Ordoyne. Ms. Schmidt was a first lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. She was an early graduate of Southeastern Louisiana University with a baccalaureate degree. She received her master of arts degree at George Peabody College in Nashville, Tenn., and received her doctorate in education at the University of Mississippi. She taught in the Ponchatoula public schools before World War II. In the early 1950s, she taught at SLU's Lab School and also worked with student teachers. She was a member of SLU's education department for several years before retiring. After retiring, she taught at Holy Ghost Catholic School and served on its school board. She was a member of Phi Kappa Phi honor society and a member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, Ms. Schmidt requested donations to North Oaks Hospice, P.O. Box 2668, Hammond, LA 70404. ************************************************************************* Obituary published in The Advocate (Baton Rouge) on: 10/29/2010 SCHMIDT, RALPH VERNON Ralph Vernon Schmidt departed this life during the early morning hours of Sunday, Oct. 24, 2010, at St. Tammany Parish Hospital in Covington. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Mr. Schmidt was born Oct. 28, 1912, in Jefferson City, Mo., being the eldest of four children born to Vernon and Sallie Schmidt. After playing football for and graduating from the University of Nebraska with a degree in engineering, he traveled extensively throughout the country on various projects eventually making his home in Shreveport and later Baton Rouge. Mr. Schmidt was president of Stupp Corp. in Baton Rouge for 25 years having reluctantly retired from that position at age 83. After living in Ruskin, Fla., for several years, he and wife, Katy, returned to Louisiana all the while, even until most recently, actively pursuing his passion for engineering through consulting and by keeping up with the latest journals and projects of interest around the country. He was a life member of the Missouri Society of Professional Engineers, the American Welding Society, American Society for Metals and numerous other professional engineering associations. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 68 years, Kathleen Martin Schmidt; a brother, Billy Schmidt; and a sister, Marie Herron. Survivors include his daughter, Julia S. Bryant, and grandson, Kevin L. Sherwood, both of Shreveport; son, Jonathan R. Schmidt and wife Carol, of Hammond; grandchildren, Ragan Schmidt Kofoed and husband Jim, of Hammond, and Jonathan P. Schmidt, of New Orleans; grandchildren by marriage, Brian M. Shirey and wife Toni, of Hammond, and Jessica Shirey, of Tickfaw, great- grandson, Benjamin Martin Kofoed; and great-grandchildren by marriage, Richard Daniel Perk Jr., Callie Elizabeth Perk, Noah Brown Shirey and Hanna Grace Shirey. He is also survived by his "baby" sister, Ellen Schmidt Becker, of St. Louis.
