Catherine was born September 26, 1925. She was a native of Amite and a resident of Hammond and graduated from Amite High School. Catherine was a retired businesswoman of forty years, as co-owner of Carr Office Environments in Hammond. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Hammond, an Honorary Lifetime member of the Hammond Chamber of Commerce, Honorary Lifetime member of the Hammond and Louisiana Jaycee Jaynes and a member of the Fern Leaf Chapter order of Eastern Star. Catherine was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and dedicated businesswoman. Catherine worked tirelessly for over fifty years to improve her community, parish and state. Catherine is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Duane Shafer; son and daughter-in-law, Duane and Leigh Price Shafer; grandchildren, Laurie Elizabeth Shafer, Mary Addie Shafer and Bradford Price Shafer; she is also survived by her sister-in-law, Virgie Laurent Sanders, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding Catherine in death are her parents, Richard Hardy and Belle Bradford Sanders; sister and brother-in-law, Patricia Mae and Cullie Flynn; sister and brother-in-law, Mayme Belle and Brooklyn Hayden, Addie Oma and Horace Varnado; and by her brother, Richard Sylvester "Bunkie" Sanders. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the visitation from the chapel of Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home, Hammond, on Sunday, August 18, 2013 from 1:00 p.m. until the funeral service at 4:00 p.m. Dr. Rodney Taylor will officiate the services with interment following in Holly Gardens Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Richard Murphy Hospice House and/or Ginger Ford Northshore-Fuller Center for Housing.
