She was born in Scotlandville on Nov. 5, 1923, to the union of Bertrand Lesley Cook and Pearl Lees Cook, the fifth of nine brothers and sisters. She was the beloved wife of the late Felton U. Shamlin and devoted mother of one daughter, Brenda Shamlin Sterling. She was a faithful and longtime member of Wesley United Methodist churches in Mansfield and Baton Rouge. Emma, along with all of her brothers and sisters, completed her early education at the Southern University Demonstration School, now known as Southern University Laboratory School. As an undergraduate at Southern University, she was initiated into Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. She pursued a graduate degree in education at Texas Southern University, Houston, and completed additional studies at Northwestern State University, Natchitoches. Her professional career began at Grambling State University, continued at DeSoto Training School (DeSoto High School), Mansfield, and culminated at All Saints High School, Pelican. She was renowned as an efficient, effective and caring teacher to her many students and colleagues. At the death of her husband, Felton, in 1997, Emma returned to her roots in Baton Rouge, the home of her daughter and three grandsons and their families. Though she left many dear friends in Mansfield, she reacquainted with many old friends in Baton Rouge and quickly made many new ones as a resident in Village Woods Retirement Community for 10 years and in The Haven at Windermere for the past 2” years. The family is extremely grateful to all the friends, relatives and neighbors who have supported them through this difficult time of her illness and death. Especially caring were the healthcare providers at The Haven and Regional Healthcare Inc. Hospice. Stacy Deville, and Joyce Johnson, of The Haven became a part of our family. Nicole Fontenot and Adrienne Abreo, of Regional, were our "Angels of mercy." Many, many thanks to each of you. Emma leaves a living legacy of love and caring in her daughter, Brenda; grandsons, Todd Lanell Sterling, Terrence Shamlin Sterling and Stephen Sterling III; granddaughters-in-law, Shelia Delozia Sterling, Allison Owen Sterling and Brianne Hemmans Sterling; great-grandchildren, Todd L. Sterling Jr., Elise Marie Sterling, Chloe Alise Sterling and Olivia Hemmans Sterling; two daughters by affection, Barbara Gilmore Woods, Baton Rouge, and Laura B. Evans, Mansfield; and god-daughters, Pamela Collins Cooper, Mansfield, and Christie Cheeley, Dallas. Two very large blended families will sorely miss her as well: two sisters and a brother, Eugenia C. Billes, Baton Rouge, Marguerite C. Davis, Kentwood, and Silas W. Cook, New Orleans; sisters-in-law, Marie C. Cook, Seattle, Lulu Cook, New Orleans, Malvin S. Smith, Monroe, Lenevia S. Robinson and Ellen B. Williams, Columbus, Ohio, and Brunetta A. Shamlin, Baton Rouge; brothers- in-law, Vaudie A. Shamlin, Columbus, and Gwynn L. Shamlin, Baton Rouge. Dearly loved were nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
