Alex A. Sheets, 84, a native of Independence and a resident of Baton Rouge, passed away Saturday, April 17, 2010. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and retired from the Baton Rouge Fire Department and the Louisiana Department of Corrections. Visitation at Greenoaks Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 20, from 10 a.m. until service at 2 p.m. Burial in Greenoaks Memorial Park. Survivors include his loving wife of 44 years, Dorothy Sheets; two daughters, Barbara Nugent and husband Weldon, and Susan Scroggs; three sons, Tim Scroggs and wife Jackie, Greg Scroggs and wife Melissa, and Michael Sheets; nine grandchildren, Jessica, Anna, Kenny, Brianna, Ashlyn, Brittany, Sarah, Austin and Angela; and 10 great-grandchildren, Keith, Taylor, Michael, Preston, Stefani, Ethan, Hailey, Roux, Trinity and Ashton. Pallbearers will be Tim Scroggs, Weldon Nugent, Kenny McCarthy, David Ivey and Edmond LeBlanc. Honorary pallbearer is Harold Miller. Mr. Sheets loved being a pilot and flying. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
