Born Jan. 3, 1940, in Baton Rouge, he died Monday, Aug. 15, 2011, in Columbia Falls, Mont., after a long illness with Lewy Body dementia. He grew up in Kentwood and graduated from LSU. Upon graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy and served on the aircraft carrier USS Shangri-La CVA38. After four years of active duty, he continued serving in the Navy Reserves and retired after 30 years with the rank of captain. He worked as a stockbroker for Merrill Lynch in New Orleans, moved to the U.S. Virgin Islands and then returned to Kentwood to own and operate the Sheffield Insurance Agency and the Sheffield Real Estate Agency. He was a member of the Kentwood Volunteer Fire Department and served as president of the Kentwood Rotary Club. After retirement, he and Gail lived in Slidell, Ponchatoula and Covington and finally in Kalispell, Mont. Preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Ollie Sheffield, who were of Kentwood; and a niece, Michele Garon, who was of Hamilton, Mont. Survived by his wife of 48 years, Gail Kemp Sheffield, of Kalispell; brother, Henry Sheffield and wife Kathleen, of Baton Rouge; sister, Sally Garon and husband Claude, of Hamilton; nephew, Jason Sheffield and wife Jeanne, of Charlotte, N.C.; and four nieces, Abigail Sheffield, of Gretna, Molly Sheffield, of New Orleans, Anne Gannon and husband Brian, of Lakeside, Mont., and Julie Garon, of Hamilton. He is also survived by grandnephew and grandniece, Jack and Ivy Gannon, of Lakeside; and a grandniece, Josephine Sheffield, of Charlotte. He was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity and a charter member of the Harrell Plantation Hunting Club in Kentwood. His later years were devoted to actively controlling the deer, wild turkey, feral pig and fish populations. Charlie was a good man and he never met a stranger. Family and friends will be notified of the date and place of a celebration-of- life gathering to be held in Kentwood. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation to the Lewy Body Dementia Association (ldba.org) would be appreciated. *************************************************************************** Obituary published in The Advocate (Baton Rouge) on: 10/9/2012 SHEFFIELD, GAIL KEMP Gail passed away after a brief illness on October 4, 2012 in Kalispell, Montana. She was born September, 6, 1940 in Houston, Texas. She was a graduate of LSU and Tulane University with a PhD in Anthropology and a Juris Doctorate Degree. She was a published author and an accomplished artist. She spent most of her adult life in Louisiana having resided in Kentwood and Covington, and for the past few years had resided in Kalispell, Montana. She was pre-deceased by her husband of 50 years, Charlie, and her parents, Harold and Jane Kemp of Houston, a brother-in- law, Bill Whitfield of Guy, Texas and a neice, Michele Garon of Hamilton, Montana. She is survived by a sister, Patsy Whitfield of Guy, Texas and a brother-in-law, Henry Sheffield and wife Kathleen of Baton Rouge, and a sister-in-law, Sally Garon and husband Claude of Hamilton, Montana and several nieces and nephews. Gail truly loved animals and was instrumental in the formation of the Feral Cat Consortium in St Tammany Parish and the Flathead Spay Neuter Task Force in Kalispell. Buffalo Hill Funeral Home in Kalispell is in charge of arrangements and a private memorial service will be held Saturday, October 13.
