She was 89 years old. She was born to George F. Brogdon, Sr. and Gretta Legeaux Brogdon on January 24, 1924 and was their first child. A native of Baton Rouge, she was resident of Destrehan, LA for almost 60 years and was a former resident of Sydney, Australia. She was a graduate and valedictorian of St. Joseph's Academy and she received a bachelor's degree in education from LSU where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority. She met LSU tackle Hubert D. Shurtz on a blind date and they were married in 1947 with the entire LSU Football Team and coaching staff in attendance. Anna Lee taught English at several schools in East Baton Rouge Parish before moving to Destrehan in 1949. She was active in many committees and activities at St. Charles Borromeo Church. She especially loved attending daily mass, teaching CCD and RCIA classes, serving as a Eucharistic Minister, and counting the offertory with the Apostlettes every Monday morning. Anna Lee received the prestigious Order of St. Louis Award from the archbishop in 1984. She also loved reading, shopping, traveling, and LSU Football. Anna Lee was preceded in death by her husband, parents, 3 sisters: Sister Kathleen Brogdon, C.S.J., Helen Bahlinger (Vernon), Georgie June Roubique (Myron); 1 brother, George F. Brogdon, Jr.; infant grandson, Jackson Wellman; favorite aunt, Mattie Legeaux. Survivors include her 3 children, Stephen Shurtz (Frances) of Baton Rouge, Mark Shurtz of Pumpkin Center, Sally Wellman (Marc) of Prairieville; 4 grandchildren Andrew Shurtz (Lori) of Brooklyn, NY, Trevor Shurtz (Katie) of Ponchatoula, Charlotte Wellman and Damian Wellman of Prairieville; 1 great-grandchild, Ian Shurtz of Ponchatoula. Pall bearers are Andrew Shurtz, Trevor Shurtz, Damian Wellman, Cary Bahlinger , Neil Gray, and Ronald Rodrigue. Honorary pallbearer is Prentice Louque, Sr. Visitation will be Wednesday, June 26, 2013 from 9 a.m.-11 a.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Church, 13396 River Rd, Destrehan, LA, followed by a Mass and interment in the church mausoleum. Condolences may be expressed at www.hclexanderfuneralhome.com. *************************************************************************** Obituary published in The Hammond Daily Star on: 9/14/2000 SHURTZ, HUBERT DEAN DESTREHAN - Hubert Dean Shurtz, 77, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, at Evangeline of Ormond Nursing Home, Destrehan.He was a native of Pinckneyville, Ill., a graduate of Louisiana State University, played professional football with the Pittsburg Steelers, taught and coached at Destrehan High School and was a retired U.S. Army Reserves lieutenant colonel and veteran of World war II. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Anna Lee Brogdon Shurtz, Destrehan; two sons, Stephen Shurtz, Baton Rouge, Mark Shurtz, Pumpkin Center; daughter, Sally Wellman, Prairieville; four grandchildren; brother, Frenche Shurtz, Zephyrhills, Fla.; and sister, Pauline Giacomo, Herrin, Ill. An infant sister and infant grandson preceded him in death. Visitation will be Friday at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, Destrehan, from 10 a.m. until the funeral at noon. Entombment will be in the church mausoleum. Mass offerings or contributions to Alzheimers Association of Greater New Orleans may be made in lieu of flowers.
