Debbie was born on March 17, 1959, in Colorado Springs, Colo., to Park McManigal and MaryEllen Lanoux. Debbie graduated from Woodlawn High School in Baton Rouge and attended Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, where she met and later married her husband of 27 years. Debbie completed her bachelor's degree in social work from Delta State University in 1990 after moving to Cleveland from Germany in 1987. Debbie was employed as a social worker by the State of Mississippi at the Bolivar County Health Department. Debbie's family was as important as her work. To wit, she is survived by her husband, Calvin, of Cleveland; four sons, Justin Simmons of Auburn Hills, Mich., and Michael, Jacob and Jeremy Simmons, all of Cleveland; daughter-in-law, Jennifer Simmons of Auburn Hills; a sister, Terri Dozier of Duluth, Ga.; and two brothers, Ron McManigal of Colorado Springs and Mark McManigal of Charleston, S.C. She passed away peacefully to join her loved ones and dear friends on Sept. 7, 2012. She was born in Tangipahoa and was a longtime resident and grocery store owner for many years in Tangipahoa. After closing and retiring from her business, she worked at Tangipahoa General Merchandise. She also worked for Kellwood in Independence. She then moved to Independence where she resided for the past 16 years. There she made new friends and "family" whom she loved and was loved dearly. She showed her kindness by delivering her homemade desserts, plants, etc to her dear friends and family. She had a green thumb like no other. Also, she enjoyed quilting and crafting with her friends in her earlier years. Although she had no children of her own, she was a loving and devoted "Aunt To" starting with her nieces and nephews and a loving and wonderful "To-To" to ALL of her great nieces and nephews. She had enormous love and never a harsh word for them. She also had much joy and happiness in her life during the last seven years by "having a job" every day babysitting her beloved "BA-BA" Haleigh and "Brother Boy" Hunter...They were the light of her life and kept her moving everyday and SHE granted their every wish. They sincerely loved her and she "loved them more.Ó Everyone will truly miss her loving care, desserts, pimento cheese and witty humor.
