He was a veteran and a member of the American Legion Post 148 in Fort Wayne and a member of the Retired Men's Club. Joan was a gifted singer, artist, cook and able partner in the family business. She was an active member of Kentwood United Methodist Church for 55 years until her death. Survived by his wife of 52 years, Bernice Monts Simmons; two daughters and sons-in-law, Charlotte and Larry Raborn, Kentwood, and Kelly and Donald Hart, Summit, Miss.; a son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Wanda Simmons, Kentwood; eight grandchildren, Wayne, Jeremy and Miranda Raborn, Stan, Dooley and Stacey Simmons and Heidi and Hannah Hart; a brother and sister-in-law, Jamie and Edna Simmons, Anaheim, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Katherine Simmons, Kentwood; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Luke Simmons, Fred Simmons, Iley Simmons, Mott Simmons and Willis Simmons; and three sisters, Beulah Wade and two infant sisters. He was a member of Line Creek Baptist Church, where he was an active deacon since 1955. He was past president of Kentwood Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a sponsor and supporter of Kentwood Baseball Association for 35 years. He retired from Kentwood Oil Co. and Simmons Texaco in 1993, which had been built and established in 1969. He was the operator of Simmons Gulf from 1958-1969.
