Joe began working for Western Union at the age of 16. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy Seabees and served in World War II. When he returned, he attended LSU and graduated in 1950. He taught school for a few years, then returned to work for Western Union in Hammond. While working there, he studied law as an apprentice with a local lawyer. He practiced law in Amite for 50 years. He was a loving husband, a devoted father, an extraordinary grandfather, a friend to many and a great lover of animals. Rozella Waller Simpson died on July 26, 2009 at North Oaks Hospital in Hammond, Louisiana, at age 92. Rozella was a long-time resident of Kilgore, Texas. She moved to Hammond in 2006 to be near her son, Rick, and his family. Family remained one of her dearest treasures second only to her love for God. Rozella was born in Yantis, Texas, on December 2, 1916 to Homer and Essie Waller. She was the second of ten children. Therefore, she was affectionately known to her siblings as "Sis". When she was a very young child, she moved with her parents and grandparents to Heber Springs, Arkansas where they were homesteaders. They traveled by covered wagon and lived in a log cabin. Later, her family moved to Almyra, Arkansas. She married Clio M. Simpson in DeWitt, Arkansas on November 13, 1937. They eventually moved to Kilgore in the 1940s. Mr. Simpson worked for East Texas Salt Water Company and Rozella worked for many years in food services at Eastview Elementary School. After retirement, she was a volunteer at Laird Memorial Hospital and she loved serving there. She especially enjoyed working in the gift shop at the hospital. She was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Kilgore and called her service there "the highlight of my life". She faithfully served in the Sanctuary Choir and was a loving second grade Sunday school teacher for 47 years. In 1980-1981, she participated in Evangelism Explosion where she learned to share her faith in Jesus Christ. She was still sharing her faith even after her move to Live Oak Village in Hammond. Rozella is survived by her son, Rick, and daughter-in-law, Judy Simpson and by her granddaughter, Saralynn Chapman and her husband, Jacob Chapman. She is also survived by sisters Flora D. Ratcliff of Quitman, Arkansas; Mary Giles of Jefferson, Georgia; Jeanne Holt of Heber Springs, Arkansas; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Clio M. Simpson was born in Livingston, La. on October 18, 1866 and died at his Loranger home on January 22, 1949. He married Miss Mary Louise Tycer April 14, 1886. Five children were born to this union: Richard W., John L., Mrs. Bessie Simpson Gerstein Meuret, Tycer L., and Mrs. Elizabeth Simpson Stewart. After the death of his wife, he married Mrs. Vinnie Husser in 1939, who also preceded him in death, as did his son John L. He leaves two sons, two daughters, 26 grandchildren, 41 great, grandchildren and 14 step- children. Grandchildren who served as pallbearers were Morris Simpson, Allen Gerstein, Hulon Simpson, Sgt. John L. Simpson, Lt. (j.g.) Thomas Simpson and Jack Stewart. Daughter, Mrs. Roscoe Stewart, was ill and couldn't attend, but her husband and sons, John and Jack, and her daughter, Mrs. Earl Davis, all of Indiana, attended. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Kentwood and retired from the trucking business in 1990.
