A native of Atlanta, she was the first woman to serve on Trumbull County Board of Health and a member of the county and state and national school food service. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary serving as treasurer and president. She also served as treasurer of the Oapse Chapter 539 of Lakeview schools; and was past member of Cortland Children's Conservation League. Survivors include two daughters, Sharon Smelko Cleal of Cortland, Ohio, and Sonya Smelko Murphy of Ponchatoula; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles A. Smelko; her parents, James and Ardell Palmer Tobin; one sister, Lenore Williams; and one brother, Earl C. Standish. Visitation will be Wednesday at Shafter-Winans Funeral Home, Cortland, from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 1 p.m. until the funeral at 2. Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery, Cortland.
