She relocated to Baton Rouge about 20 years ago to spend her retirement years close to her family and friends. Sister Smith was a faithful member and usher in her church in New York. Sister Smith joined Mount Carmel Baptist Church of Baton Rouge under the leadership of the Rev. Ronald T. Williams. She attended faithfully until her health failed. Because of her age and health, she encouraged her family to allow her to live in the Louisiana Guest House so that she would receive the necessary care that was required for her. Sister Smith loved her family and would do anything she could to help them. She was an ambassador for peace and always shared her kindness with all who came in contact with her. Mary June was a master teacher who loved children and was known for her ability to train teachers and instill in them the capacity to inspire children with a love of learning. Mary June, 88, died peacefully Monday morning, June 28, 2004, at home with her only child, Genellen, at her side. She was born in Zwolle on May 21, 1916. She graduated from high school in Colfax and was a graduate of Whitworth Junior College in 1934. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church and attended church every Sunday through Easter Sunday, April 11, 2004, just before being diagnosed with cancer the following Wednesday. Mary June enjoyed reading, the theater and traveling, having visited many foreign countries as well as most of the United States. She was an avid sports fan and keenly followed LSU sports.
