Glenda was born on October 25, 1936 in Tickfaw, Louisiana. She was the first child of Jake Starkey and Margaret 'Idee' Rogers Gulotta. Glenda grew up as a country girl in Hammond, LA with two sisters. She graduated from Hammond High in 1954 and then Providence School of Nursing in Waco, TX in 1958. It is there that she met the man of her dreams: Craig Harrison Smyser. Glenda and Craig were married on December 27, 1958 in Hammond, LA. Glenda gave birth to and raised three children. Glenda enjoyed caring for others. She was an operating room nurse her entire career. Later in her career she managed the operating rooms at two hospitals, and she would tell stories of battling with stubborn doctors who did not realize it was 'her' operating room. After Glenda retired, she kept active participating at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, where she was a member for thirty years and helped run the 'Helping Hands' ministry. In addition, she volunteered at the Foothill Family Shelter. Glenda was also involved in the Sister City program between Upland, CA and Mildura, Australia. Glenda shared her joy of cooking with everyone. She was known for her 'down home' cooking, from chicken jambalaya, to red beans and rice, to the best Thanksgiving turkey anyone could imagine. Glenda loved family and enjoyed traveling and going on vacations and cruises with her children and their families. "Nana" loved to visit and spend time with her five grandchildren. Glenda was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Elaine Rainey. Glenda is survived by her beloved husband of 51 years Craig Harrison Smyser; son and daughter-in-law, Rocky and Shellie Smyser of Abilene, TX; daughter Robyn Smyser of Upland, CA; son Scott Smyser of Glendale, CA; daughter-in-law, Sharick Smyser of Glendale, CA; grand- children, Christopher Smyser of Columbia, SC; Brittany and Ashley Smyser of Abilene, TX; Harrisan and Holden Smyser of Glendale, CA; sisters, Dorothy Starkey of Hammond, LA; and Margaret LeBlanc of Independence, LA; and many nieces and nephews.
