A former mayor of Greensburg and superintendent of the St. Helena Parish school system, he died at 5:42 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, 2005, at his home in Greensburg. He was 81 and a native of Chatawa, Miss. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Greensburg and St. Helena Lodge 96, F&AM. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the European Campaign of World War II and served as mayor of the town of Greensburg from 1969 to 1985 and superintendent of St. Helena Parish schools from 1977 to 1985. He is survived by his wife, Anna Phillips Speed, Greensburg; two sons and daughters-in-law, Clifton Thomas Speed Sr. and Donna Casey Speed, Greensburg, and Clarence Eddie Speed Jr. and Laurie Gill Speed, Galvez; four grandchildren, Brenna Lauren Speed, Derrick Blake Speed, Clifton Thomas Speed Jr. and Dianne Marie Speed; five sisters, Minnie Mae S. Freeman, San Antonio, Myrtle S. Buitt, Andalusia, Ala., Billie Jean S. Neri, Park Ridge, Ill., Barbara S. Rushing, McComb, Miss., and Ann S. Thomas, Monticello, Ark.; and three brothers, John M. Speed, Chatawa, Carl O. Speed, Hammond, and James F. Speed, Ada, Okla. He was preceded in death by his parents, Luther Monroe Speed and Lillie Rhodus Speed; two sisters, Mary Ruth S. Hayes and Virginia S. Reynolds; and five brothers, Percy E. Kennedy, Luther W. Speed, Clifton F. Speed, George R. Speed and Lloyd M. Speed. Visitation at First Baptist Church of Greensburg on Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Thursday from 8 a.m. until religious service at 11 a.m., conducted by the Rev. Arthur "Bo" Rice and the Rev. Michael Woodard. Interment in Pine Ridge Cemetery, Pine Ridge. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Greensburg or the charity of your choice. Brother James Speed, Jr. was a native of Coushatta, La., and a resident of Independence, La. He was born March 17, 1950 to the late James Speed Sr. and Sallie Coleman Speed. He transitioned from his earthly home to his heavenly home on March 8, 2012 in Houston, Texas. James attended Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree. It was during this time that he met his wife. He continued his course studies at Southeastern Louisiana University. James was united in holy matrimony to Edna Brown Speed on March 29, 1971. He was the proud father of two children, Kenneth Speed and Marcia Speed. He was employed as a state employee for the Department of Transportation and Development as an inspector. He worked there for almost thirty years. He was commissioned in United States Army in 1972. During his service in the Army, he excelled to the rank of Captain and received several Meritorious Service Medals for initiating many unique and highly effective training programs to enhance racial and cultural awareness among all personnel of the command. He was responsible for several television productions and special activities for significant events involving Race Relations and Equal Opportunity. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Edna Brown Speed; his son, Kenneth Speed (Alisha); his daughter, Marcia; his sister, Pearlie B. Lott (David); and a host of in-laws, nieces, nephews, and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Speed Sr. and Sallie Speed, and his brother, Bobby Speed. Visitation will be Wednesday, March 14, 2012 from 11:00 a.m. until the funeral services at 1: OO p.m. at Temple Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Kentwood, LA, where The Rev.
