She was an alumnae of DePauw University and member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority. She completed bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of Michigan and Wayne State University before working in the Michigan Department of Social Work. She was active in Friends of the Library groups and with the Episcopal Church Women. Survivors include a son, Jack Spencer of Hammond; a daughter, Anne Spencer Davis of Kingwood; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held Saturday in the Chapel of Eden Terrace, Kingwood. Arrangements were with Kingwood Funeral Home. The family suggests memorial contributions to the DePauw University Annual Fund, 300 E. Seminary St., Greencastle, Ind., 46135 with the inscription "in memory of Elizabeth Burns Spencer, Class of 1936, targeted to scholarships." ************************************************************************* Obituary published in The Hammond Daily Star on: 7/19/2000 SPENCER, JOHN CHESTER, JR. FRENCH SETTLEMENT - John Chester Spencer Jr., 75, died Monday, July 17, 2000, in French Settlement. He was a native of Nashville, Tenn., a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a retired employee of Illinois Central Railroad. Survivors include his wife, Marie Ruby Lutz Spencer, French Settlement; two daughters, Helen Marie Spencer, Elk City, Kan., Lynda Ann Guffey, Ponchatoula; three sons, John Chester Spencer III and Frederick Charles Spencer, French Settlement, Steven Michael Spencer, Albany; two sisters, Hazel Scott, Senatobia, Miss., Louise Maguire, Memphis, Tenn., 17 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Two brothers, Nick and Bill Spencer, preceded him in death.The Rev.
