ALFRED WOOD A native and resident of Hammond, he died Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, at North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond. He was 86 years old. Visiting at First Presbyterian Church, Hammond, from noon Monday until religious services at 2 p.m., conducted by the Rev. Edmond Carver. Interment in Amite Cemetery. Survived by a daughter, Katharine Spiller Hudson of Jackson, Miss.; and a son, Alfred Wood Spiller III of Hammond. Preceded in death by his parents, Alfred W. and Anna Louise Ogden Spiller; a brother, Edmond Ogden Spiller; and a sister, Caroline "Colleen" Spiller McGee. He was an elder of First Presbyterian Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran and judge advocate in World War II. He was a former French professor at Southeastern Louisiana University and a member of the Ponchatoula Rotary. He was a graduate of Tulane University and a 1939 graduate of Tulane Law School. He was a member of the Louisiana State Bar Association for over 60 years and one of the oldest members of the Tangipahoa Parish Bar Association. He was the 1977 assistant district attorney in Tangipahoa Parish. He was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity at Tulane University and a member of the French and Spanish clubs in Hammond. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial donations be made tothe Habitat for Humanities Foundation. She was 89 years old. After operating "Margie Spiller's Knit Shop" for many years, she became an art instructor for East Baton Rouge Parish Council on Aging and enjoyed teaching art and continued painting her own works of art until recent years. Born in Gulfport, Miss, she attended Fairpark High School in Shreveport and was graduated from Baton Rouge High School. She then attended Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond where she studied Art and Music on a Clarinet scholarship and met her future husband and father of her four children., Edmund Ogden Spiller Sr. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Baton Rouge and served as children's Sunday School superintendent. She was an avid golfer and a sustaining member of the Junior League of Baton Rouge. She was a member of P.E.O. and served on the board of the Louisiana Art and Artists guild and the Louisiana Alliance of Arts Educators. Margie is survived by her daughter Caroline Spiller Ellsworth Rucker and husband Jerry of Houston, Texas and sons Edmund Ogden Spiller Jr, MD and wife Carolyn Brown Spiller of Hammond, John David "Jack" Spiller and wife Linda Gibbens Spiller of Baton Rouge, and Lindsey Wood Spiller and wife Terry Terrill Spiller of Baton Rouge. She loved and enjoyed her grandchildren Anna Louise Padgett and husband Michael Littleton, Caroline Madigan, Warren Ellsworth 1V, MD and wife Rachel, Edmund Winthrop Ellsworth and wife Jennifer, Rachel Spiller Garrett and Husband Paul D . Garrett, MD, Catherine Spiller Rosenbaum, MD and husband Bill, Andrew W. Haley and wife Courtney, Dr. J. Brook Haley and wife Beth, Gregory Lars Duoos, David Spiller and wife Hillary, Brent Spiller and wife Allison, Evie Spiller Ashby and husband Kyle, and Sarah Spiller. She had seven great grandchildren, Penelope, Matthew, Anna, William, Mary Michael, Julien and Boden. She was Preceded in death by her parents Joseph Stanislaus Foretich and Louise Lindsey Foretich, two brothers, Joseph J. Foretich and Leo L. Foretich, son-in-law, Warren Ellsworth and daughter- in-law Susan McQuay Spiller. The family wishes to thank North Oaks Hospice of Hammond and her several recent caregivers with special appreciation for Marie Lloyd for her years of graceful and dedicated service. Funeral Services will be at Rabenhorst Funeral home at 825 Government St. in Baton Rouge on Thursday June 21 at 1 P.M with visitation beginning at 11 A.M. Interment will be at Greenoaks Cemetery in Baton Rouge. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations would be welcome at Arts Council of Baton Rouge, North Oaks Hospice of Hammond, La. or a charity of your choice. *************************************************************************** Obituary published in The Advocate (Baton Rouge) on: 3/21/2001 SPILLER, SUSAN MCQUAY A longtime resident of Hammond, she died Sunday, March 18, 2001, at her home. She was 53 and a native of Akron, Ohio. She graduated with a bachelor of arts degree from Southeastern Louisiana University and earned her master of social work degree at LSU. She was a longtime social worker and a deeply committed civil rights activist. She worked as a house parent for Boy's Home in Ohio, then as a VISTA volunteer in Lumpkin County, Ga., and as a paralegal for Georgia Legal Services for the indigent. She worked tirelessly to develop the first community homes for adults with mental retardation with the Tangipahoa Association for Retarded Citizens. After completing her MSW, she was a medical social worker at North Oaks Hospice and later at North Oaks Rehabilitation Hospital. Her interest in maintaining and promoting professional excellence in the field of social work led her to become certified as a licensed clinical social worker for the state of Louisiana. She participated in education as a credentialed supervisor of MSW candidates as well as state licensing of clinical social worker candidates. She was a member of the National Association of Social Workers. Beginning with her childhood Girl Scout experiences, she was a self-taught naturalist, active in birding, backpacking and gardening. A graduate of the first Tangipahoa Master Gardener course, she worked extensively on the restoration of the Historic Camellia Garden at the LSU AgCenter in Hammond, and helped to ensure a lasting horticultural treasure for the community. She was a member of the Unitarian Universalist church throughout her life. She was a founding member, trustee and driving force in the establishment of the Hammond Unitarian Universalist Society. An avid reader, she was also a founder of Sylvia's Literary Society. Survivors include her husband, Edmund O. Spiller, M.D., of Hammond; two sons, Andy Haley of Nashville, Tenn., and Jonathan Brook Haley of Irvine, Calif.; two daughters, Rachel Spiller Garrett of San Antonio, and Catherine Caldwell Spiller, M.D., of New Orleans; and two grandchildren, Matthew and Anna Garrett. Her warm and caring presence will be missed by her family and her many friends. The Rev. Dr. Steve J. Crump, senior minister of the Baton Rouge Unitarian Church and visiting minister to the Hammond Unitarian Universalist Society, will conduct a memorial service at 5 p.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church in Hammond. Visitation will follow the service at the church fellowship hall. Private interment will be at Rose Memorial Cemetery in Hammond.
