"He was a master teacher of the highest order," said Melvin Kahn, Dr. Stanga's colleague and a political science professor at WSU. "Students, particularly pre-law students, considered him very rigorous and demanding, but at the same time, very helpful as a mentor." John Ellis Stanga Jr., 69, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008, from natural causes, his son, Joseph Stanga, said. He was a political science professor at WSU for nearly 40 years. Dr. Stanga taught constitutional law and other political science and government classes before taking a leave of absence in October 2006 after a stroke. Dr. Stanga was born in New Orleans and came to Wichita in 1968 to teach at WSU. "Teaching was a passion of his, and was his life's work," Joseph said. Dr. Stanga and his former wife, Joyce, had three sons, Joseph, John Peter and Thomas. John Peter said his father was a staunch Democrat who loved to play chess, garden and cook Cajun food, especially red beans and rice. He said his father always had the best interests of his family in mind. "He was the kind of guy that would show you his love more than he would tell you," John Peter said. At WSU, Dr. Stanga was always willing to act as a mentor to colleagues and students by reading and editing manuscripts or serving on thesis committees, Kahn said. Dr. Stanga also was chairman of the political science department for six years and served on the faculty senate. "John was really a renaissance-type person in terms of knowledge," Kahn said. "He was the only one in our department who was capable of teaching any course." Kahn said Dr. Stanga was one of two WSU political science professors to publish an article in the prestigious American Political Science Review. Kahn said Dr. Stanga's students have become attorneys, judges and leaders in the Wichita area and around the nation. Former Wichita Mayor Bob Knight was among them. Scott Stucky, a federal judge in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces, was also one of Dr. Stanga's students and took his constitutional law course in 1969. After graduating from WSU, Stucky attended Harvard Law School. He said Dr. Stanga's teaching and mentoring helped prepare him for a law career. "He was certainly a knowledgeable guy," Stucky said. "I remember his class with fondness." A viewing for Dr. Stanga was held at Cochran Mortuary, 1411 N. Broadway, Wichita, Kan., on Tuesday, Jan. 6, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The memorial service was at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 909 S. Market, Wichita, on Wednesday, Jan. 7, at 1 p.m. Graveside service will be in Stanga Cemetery in Ponchatoula on Saturday, Jan. 10, at 11 a.m. An online guestbook is available at www.harrymckneely.com. *************************************************************************** Obituary published in The Advocate (Baton Rouge) on: 8/27/2004 STANGA, JOHN ADAM An offshore cook and a resident and native of Hammond, he died Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2004, at North Oaks Medical Center, Hammond.
