She was born in Natalbany on June 10, 1918, and had been a resident of Baton Rouge since the 1930s. She was a joyful, loving, optimistic woman who cherished her family, her friends, her church and the garden club. She loved to cook: something new from the cooking channel, an old recipe with a new twist, no recipe at all - just what was in the fridge and cabinet - and hamburgers for the great-grandchildren. Birthday celebrations called for the celebrant's special dish and at Christmas she continued to prepare the turkey and dressing and most of the side dishes. She filled her yard with blossoming plants and could not visit a garden center without buying at least one more. She created a haven for birds and butterflies. Nelmo is survived by her children, Jean Stephens Wall and Bud Snowden, Ronny and Elaine Stephens, Sheryl Stephens Dawkins and Brent Howard Stephens; grandchildren, Brett and Alecia Stephens Johnson, Lisa and Ricky Tucker II, Monica Stephens, Charles and Ariana Wall Postlethwait, Sherry Tucker Smith and Brooks and Lana Stephens Byars; great-grandchildren, Brandon and Josh Johnson, Ricky III and Matthew Tucker, Brittni and Stephen Velasquez, Paige and Kaelyn Smith and Randa, Shaelyn, Logan and Katarina Byars; and a great-great-granddaughter, Alyssa Tapp. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Howard Stephens; son-in-law, Bruton Dawkins; parents, Thomas Elmo and Norma Settoon Castleberry; and brother, Eugene Castleberry. Visitation at Greenoaks Funeral Home on Monday, Feb. 9, from 10 a.m. until memorial service at noon, officiated by the Rev. Ken Carroll. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Broadmoor United Methodist Church. ************************************************************************* Obituary published in The Advocate (Baton Rouge) on: 7/31/2002 STEPHENS, ROGER DALE A MSW social worker with JCCY Correctional Youth Center and a retired U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, he died at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 27, 2002, at Summit Hospital in Baton Rouge.
