He was born Jan. 13, 1928, in New Orleans, son of the late Henry Jules Sterken and Violet Margaret Bubert Sterken. He was a retired pipe draftsman. Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Courtade Sterken; sons, Ervin H. Sterken Jr. and Ronnie W. Sterken; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Tillman J. and Sylvia Sterken; and a sister and brother-in-law, Barbara S. and Al Alack. He was preceded in death by a son, Michael W. Sterken. Relatives and friends will be received Tuesday, April 22, at the French Corner Baptist Church, Ponchatoula, from 10 a.m. until service at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Eric Hathaway officiating. He is survived by his son, Joshua Sterken; 2 daughters, Ashley Sterken, Jennifer Sterken; parents, Ervin and Carolyn C. Sterken Sr.; 2 brothers, Ervin Sterken Jr. and Ronnie Sterken. Friends will be received on Wednesday, January 9, 2008 from 11:00 am until the Memorial Service begins at 1:00 pm at the French Corner Baptist Church in Ponchatoula. Sylvia will be remembered as being a loving wife, mother and grandmother who loved Jesus as she served Him throughout her life. Through Jesus Christ, she never met a stranger, and took every opportunity to witness for the Lord. Sylvia leaves behind her loving husband, Tillman Sterken, Sr.; three sons, Tillman Sterken, Jr. and his wife Angie, Barry Sterken and his wife Gay, and David Sterken and his wife Michelle; grandchildren, Chad Sterken, Amanda Sterken Warren, Ben Ernst, Kayla Ernst, Erica Smith, Grant Sterken, and Olivia Sterken; great-grandchildren, Haze Shelby, Lathyn Wall, Bentley Smith, Hartley Smith, and London Smith. Sylvia also leaves behind her sisters, Marion Vicknair and husband Tommy, Clara Meissner, and Rosemary Cone and her husband Malcolm "Sonny"; and her brothers, Herbert "Bootsy" Cortez, George Cortez, and Gerald Cortez and his wife Fran. Preceding Sylvia in death were her parents, Herbert and Leoncia Cortez and her sister, Velma Simon.
