Joachim T. Sutera died on Monday, March 14, 2005, at Belle Maison in Hammond. He was 89, born on Aug. 26, 1915, in Bayou Goula and raised in New Orleans. Mr. Jake was preceded in death by his mother, Leona Ricca; his father, Lawrence Sutera; brothers, Carl and Sam; sisters, Josephine, Victoria, Felicie and Catherine; and his daughter, Lawrene Elizabeth Sutera. He attended Our Lady of Lourdes School and graduated from Jesuit High School in 1934, alumni of New Orleans. He served in the U.S. Army and, during World War II, served from 1941 until 1945. Mr. Jake was supervisor of Lyons Sports Recreation Center and Berhman Center of NORD. for 30 years. He is survived by his wife, Annette Werner Sutera; his son, Derek Stevenson and his wife, Lucy; daughter, Angela Ann and her husband, Robert Lobie; daughter, Paris Theresa Sutera; six grandchildren, Eric, Brittany, Ken, Brad, Kandace and Thomas; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Jake was an avid follower of LSU sports. Graveside service will be held Saturday, March 19, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Vincent No. 1 Cemetery on Soniat Street in New Orleans. Donations may be made to The American Lung and Heart Association of New Orleans.
