She was born on Sunday, Dec. 11, 1927, in Bolivar. Mrs. Sweatt was a member of Westchurch Church of Christ in Hammond. She was a retired educator who taught business courses at Ponchatoula High School and Hammond High School. Mrs. Sweatt was a 55-year member of Delta Kappa Gamma Honor Society and she volunteered for 20 years for the AARP Tax Program for the Elderly and Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center. Surviving are her husband, Dr. Basil O. Sweatt Sr.; daughter, Arnelle Adcock; son, Owen Sweatt Jr.; three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; sister, Brenda Bankston; and brother, Hollis Bankston. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ruth Vine and Levi Houston Bankston; sister, Esther Pettitt; and five brothers, Harold, Johnny, Curtis, Sidney and Billy Bankston. Friends will be received at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home in Hammond on Thursday, Feb. 12, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday, Feb. 13, from 10 a.m. until service at 11 a.m., with Brother Jim Mauldin officiating. Interment in Parklawn Memorial Gardens in Hammond. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Southeastern Louisiana University College of Business Scholarship Fund or The Delta Kappa Gamma Honor Society, 20470 Old Covington Highway, Hammond, LA 70403.
