He is survived by his wife Heather Sykes, two sons, Damien and Gage Sykes all of Albany, his mother and step-father, Debbie & Shelby Graham of Holden, two brothers and their wives, Malcolm & Michelle Sykes of Holden, Bradley & Amanda Sykes of Holden, nieces and nephews, Shelbi, Shayna, Jeffrey, Sebastian, Alyssa, all of Holden, and Kim, Paden, Alaina, Dillion, Jacob, and Matthew all of Tickfaw. A longtime resident of Holden, J.L. passed away on Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, at North Oaks Medical Center, Hammond, at age 87. He was a retired superintendent with Cribbs Roofing, Baton Rouge, with 40 years of employment. He served the community as a reserve deputy with the Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office for many years. J.L. was a member of First United Pentecostal Church of Holden. J.L. leaves behind his loving and devoted wife of 70 years, Ruby Sistrunk Sykes; sons, Jesse L. Sykes and wife Beverly, Ronald L. Sykes and wife Brenda, Edwin W. Sykes, Vernon S. Sykes and wife Lynn, and Leland W. Sykes and wife Lana; 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Elvira Timberlake; and two brothers, C.V. Sykes and Huey P. Sykes. Preceding J.L. in death were his infant daughter, Violet Joyce Sykes; parents, Robert "Bob" Sykes and Mary Hoyt Sykes; brothers, R.B. Sykes and K.C. Sykes; and three infant siblings.
