Elbert L. Sylvest, a retired business owner in Bogalusa, died Monday, June 27, 2005, of natural causes at the Louisiana War Veterans Home in Jackson. He was 85. Mr. Sylvest was born in Washington Parish and lived in Bogalusa most of his life. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lena Mae Henderson Sylvest; first-born daughter, Kathy Gene; and a brother, Walter Ray Sylvest. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Elbert Jr. and Jackie Sylvest of New Orleans; four daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and Stanley Nobles of Bogalusa, Charmaine and Robert Vernon of Denham Springs, Garnet and John Branch of Baton Rouge and Giselle and John Blanche of Fullerton, Calif.; sister, Ruth Mitchell of Slidell; two brothers, Harold Sylvest of Milford, Ohio, and Richard Sylvest of Hammond; eight grand- children and their spouses, Brent and April Nobles, Traci and Jarod Rogan, Kate Vernon, Rob Vernon, Patrick Branch, Nathan Branch, Emily Blanche and Taylor Blanche; and a great-grandson, George Nobles. He served his country during World War II as an instrument specialist in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was a member of Memorial Baptist Church, a deacon of the former Calvary Baptist Church and a member of the Masonic Lodge of Bogalusa. Visiting at Brown-McGehee Funeral Home, 610 Avenue F, Bogalusa, on Wednesday, June 29, from 10 a.m. until service in the chapel at 1 p.m., with Dr. J.R. Hume officiating. Interment in Ponemah Cemetery, Bogalusa. *************************************************************************** Obituary published in The Advocate (Baton Rouge): 3/21/2004 SYLVEST, MARY LOUISE BOOTY Mary Louise Booty Sylvest, 79, a resident of Franklinton and former resident of Baton Rouge, died Saturday, March 13, 2004 at 7:15 a.m. at her home following a lengthy illness with diabetes. She was born Feb. 9, 1925, to Howard Ray and Sybil Speed Booty. She was a member of Sunlight Baptist Church and former member of Weller Avenue Baptist Church. She served as a columnist for the Era-Leader newspaper, having written 'Kountry Korner' and 'Kountry Kitchen' for more than 20 years. Matthew 7:7-8. Mary Louise is survived by her devoted husband of 57 years and nine months, Francis D. Sylvest Sr.; and cherished by seven children: three sons and two daughters-in-law, F. D. "Doug" Jr. and John and Pat, all of Franklinton, Howard Ray and Debbie of Denham Springs; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Mary and Barry Pence and Carolyn Hughes, all of Franklinton, Beverly and William Mills of Lewisburg, Tenn., and Carmen Louise and Henry Welch Sr. of Baton Rouge. She is also survived by a loving sister, Edith Rushing of Kentwood; dear sister-in-law, Norma Booty of Monticello, Ill.; brother-in-law and sister- in-law, Dwight and Faye Sylvest of Zachary; and mother-in-law, Arebelle Sylvest of Franklinton. She was the proud grandmother of 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Bessie Marie Clifton; a brother, George Ray Booty; father-in-law, the Rev. Hammond A. Sylvest; grandsons, John Donaldson Jr., Barry Pence Jr., Mark Sylvest, Steven Sylvest and William Mills II. Services were held at Crain Funeral Home in Franklinton on Monday, March 15, 2004. The Rev. Sammie Smith officiated, with burial in Pilgrim Rest Cemetery. Pallbearers were Henry Welch Jr., James Mills, Lanny Conerly, Mark Horsman and Sylvain Tawzy. Mr. Richard D. Sylvest, 81 of Denham Springs, died Wednesday, June 28, 2006, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. He was born Friday, Jan. 30, 1925, in Franklinton, son of the late Stephen and Naomi Tisdale Sylvest. Mr. Sylvest was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Hammond for 54 years. He was the past master of the Masonic Livingston Lodge in Hammond and past patron of the Eastern Star, Fern Leaf chapter. He also was a member of the Telephone Company Pioneers of America. Surviving are his wife, Vermelle Hoyt Sylvest and son and daughter-in-law, Richard S. and Linda Sylvest; son, Dennis L. Bickford; daughter, Paula Bickford Graves; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; sister, Ruth S. Mitchell; brother, Harold Sylvest; and sister-in-law, Bronis McGee Sylvest. He was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Charlotte E. Bickford; and two brothers, Elbert L. and Walter Ray Sylvest. Friends will be received on Saturday, July 1, at the First Baptist Church in Hammond from 10 a.m. until service at noon. Interment in Parklawn Memorial Gardens, Hammond.
