Survivors include her children, Marie Thames Rainey of Kentwood, Gretchen Thames Wilcox of Slidell, Karen Thames Wallace, Timmy Thames, Trisha Thames and Sally Thames Hartman, all of Amite; two sisters, Joy Kathleen Laiche of Kentwood and Ruth Vining White of Loranger; two brothers, James "Billy" Vining of Colorado and Johnny Vining of Arkansas; 22 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Thames; one son, Jimmy Thames; her parents, the Rev. Gordon Vining Sr. and Nettie Vining; and two sisters, Amelia Ehrlich and Sadie Parker. The funeral will be Friday at Chappapeela Baptist Church, Amite, at 2 p.m. The Rev. Darryl Miller will officiate. Burial will be at the church cemetery. Crain and Son Funeral Home, Franklinton, is in charge. *************************************************************************** Obituary published in The Advocate (Baton Rouge) on: 11/04/1999 THAMES, HARRIET NEELIS Died Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, at North Oaks Medical Center, Hammond. She was 96, born Jan. 12, 1903, in the family home on North Pine Street in Hammond, the daughter of Susan Mooney Neelis and George Campbell Neelis Sr. Her father was a leading merchant in Hammond. Her grandfather, Henry Clay Mooney, served as the town's first mayor and her grandmother, Harriet Waterman Mooney, was the first postmistress. Her great-grandfather, Melzar Waterman, established the first Sunday school in Hammond in 1866. In 1873, her grandmother, Harriet Mooney, was one of the first members of the Hammond Mission Society. The work of this organization led to the establishment of the first church in Hammond, Grace Memorial Episcopal Church. She was a member of the Mayflower Society. She knew a great deal about the history of Hammond and enjoyed sharing it with anyone interested in the topic. At the time of her death, she was the oldest communicant of Grace Memorial Episcopal Church. She served her church well for many years as a Sunday school teacher, and a member of Auxiliary "A," Auxiliary "B," the Altar Guild and St. Margaret's Guild. She was deeply devoted to her church and it is fitting that she will be laid to rest in the church cemetery. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Buford Thames. She is survived by a daughter, Evelyn Sue Thames Hutson of Falls Church, Va.; a niece, Mary Harriet Blomeyer Thames of Hammond; four grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, a great-niece and a great-nephew. Visitation will be at Grace Memorial Episcopal Church, Hammond, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday. Visiting at the church, 1 p.m. until religious services at 3 p.m. Friday. Burial in the church cemetery. Lee was born February 8, 1950, in Tylertown, Mississippi.
