Betty Jean Smiley Thomas went home to be with our Lord and Savior at the age of 72 at 2:15am on October 9th 2013 surrounded by her family. She was born on December 30, 1940 in Doyle, La. She was a resident of Independence and a member of Light House Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher and VBS Director. Her passions were to cook, write poetry, ceramics, gardening and her grandchildren. Survived by her mother Vera M. Smiley, loving husband of fifty-seven years Curtis W. Thomas, a brother John C. He is survived by his wife, Renee Cotton-Thomas; parents, George Nelson Thomas Jr. and Vernell Stewart Thomas; two daughters, Whitney Renee Cotton and Madilyn Thomas; a son, Jory Nelson Thomas Jr.; a sister, Jamie Lin Thomas; a brother, Stewart "Joel" Thomas; grandmother, Helen Bennett; mother- in-law, Carolyn Cotton; father-in-law and spouse, Michael and Bonita Cotton; sister-in-law, Shawna Guidry; brothers-in-law, Michael Cotton Jr., Jacob Cotton, Casey Johnson, Tony Johnson and Travis Herring Jr.; aunts and uncles, Ronnie and Linda Meyers, Todd and Linnell Harrington, Stevie Stewart, Ricky and Angela Stewart, Stanley and Gwen Thomas, Steve and Betty Sibley and Flora Rowland; and a grandchild, Aubrey Cotton. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Eula Stewart; grandfathers, Burnell Stewart and George Nelson Thomas Sr.; uncle, Frankie Thomas; and cousin, Nelson Hinson Jr. Pallbearers will be Ronnie Meyer Jr., Ben Thomas, Michael Cotton Jr., Jacob Cotton, Caleb Harrington, Todd Harrington, Derrick Stewart and Mike Thompson. Thomas, Sr., died October 4th at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge, LA. Mr. Thomas, a self employed mechanic from Hammond, is survived by his daughter, Tashika Brumfield and four sons; Reginald Matthews, Michael Brumfield, Kenneth Brumfield all of Hammond and Tryone Baker of Texas. He also leaves to mourn three sisters, Bertha Robinson, Ethel T. Clay, Eloise T. Jones, and two brothers; Julius L. Thomas, Jr. and Kenneth Thomas and 12 grandchildren and nieces, nephews as well as other family and friends. Mr. Thomas was preceded in death by his father, grandparents Joseph and Mariah White and Joe and Nannie Davis as well as two uncles and four aunts. The visitation will take place at N. A. James Funeral Home, Hammond, on Sunday October 10th from 4-8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Jerry Hanible at Greenfield Baptist Church on Monday October 11th at 11 a.m. Interment will be at Greenlawn Cemetery, Hammond.
